[ALOCHONA] Re: [notun_bangladesh] News on Yunus

Dear Readers,
Please do not fool yourself by the Dr. degree persons' comments including me, and the Bangladeshi immigrants comments. Think yourself, you are the person to judge from your wisdom.
Very best wishes,
Mahmud

News on Yunus:

Shocking but factual news will come out in a few days why Bangladeshi Nobel Laureate Prof. Yunus was removed abruptly by the current government. Wait for the news.

I tend to agree with Dr. S.A. Hossain's assertion on the issue. Due to high interest rates, many of us may not be aware of the stories of failings  and tragedies that caused to the borrowers. Time to time NPR make stories on this topic.
However, right now Dr. Yunus and Grameen Bank is a legal issue. Let us leave it to the legal system of the land. Whatever is the outcome after this exercise, we all must respect it.

Best wishes,

With due respect, I want to say that Dr. Yunus should abide by the rule of the country where he lives. Instead of focusing here and there , he should concentrate his attention on improving the goods and services, he was given the noble prize for.

I have always been a good fan of Dr. Yunus; and who wouldn't be? Before leaving Boston in the middle of 1997, we the Bangladeshi community in Boston decided to invite Dr.Yunus  as a chief guest to the annual meeting of Bangladesh Association of New England, Inc. established in Boston, USA.
As close as last summer, I proudly introduced his work to a group of my  students here in Cincinnati,Ohio.

But my trust has been shaken a bit recently after quite unexpectedly landing on an NPR (National Public Radio) station some time in the fall of 2010. I was surfing channels while driving and suddenly stopped after hearing the name of Dr. Yunus and micro credit/Grameen Bank. The NPR was broadcasting the gruesome reports of hundreds of suicides among the people who borrowed money from micro credit lenders. It broke my heart right there. What an irony!

With that said, I still believe that Dr. Yunus is an international icon and he has noble intentions. He has made a great stride in changing the lives of the poor. But, he still has a long way to go in making micro credit /grameen bank a sustainable economic model for the poor. He needs to make lots of sacrifices including find out the ways to reduce the interest rate  so that the poor  can afford it and they don't need to sell what little they have/ hd left  for paying the skyrocketing interest of the loan they receive from micro credit/Grameen Bank. Also, he needs to advocate for the development of compassionate mentor ships to borrowers. There is no doubt in my mind that Dr. Yunus is capable of doing this without breaking the rule of the law of the country. That's my wisdom of the day.

Thanks and regards,
