10 RU students injured in BCL attack


Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League attack students who were staging a sit-in in front of the administrative building of Rajshahi University yesterday protesting recent price hike of first year application forms. Ten students were injured in the attack

At least ten students of Rajshahi University (RU) were injured as Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men allegedly attacked students staging a sit-in on campus protesting recent price hike of first year application forms.

Witnesses said some 200 hundred students under the banner "Students against increased fees" were staging the sit-in in front of the university administrative building when some unidentified people began vandalising a university bus there.

Afterwards, some BCL activists led by Masud Rana and outsiders including some Jubo League men attacked the students, said the protestors.

Four of the injured are "Students against increased fees" Coordinator Iftekharul Islam Shiplu, Chhatra Federation RU unit General Secretary Ahsan Habib Rocky, Chhatra Maitree RU unit Convener Ikbal Kabir and Samajtantrik Chhatra Front RU unit School Affairs Secretary Rehan Mahmud.

The injured includes general students Sumon Bokshi, Shirin Katun, Khademul Islam, Bashar Ahmed and Soikat Hossain. Name of the remaining student could not be known immediately.

However, RU unit BCL President Ahmed Ali and General Secretary Abu Hossain Bipu denied the allegation.Leaders of left-leaning political parties in RU alleged that the university authority instigated the BCL activists to stop the protest programme.

RU Assistant Proctor Mustak Ahmed said they would take steps against those involved in vandalising the bus. However, he avoided answering questions regarding the attack on the students.The protesting students urged admission seekers not to buy admission forms at the increased rate.

BCL men muscle in on tender deals, beat officials

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists vandalised the room of the executive engineer of Public Works Department (PWD) in Sirajganj and assaulted an upazila project implementation officer in Feni over tender issues yesterday.

Our Sirajganj correspondent reported that police arrested town Chhatra League convenor Saidul Islam Babu on charge of ransacking the room of PWD Executive Engineer Md Noor Islam for not awarding the BCL leader a tender illegally.

Babu was arrested in Dhangora area of the town soon after filing of a case by the engineer with Sadar Police Station under the Speedy Trial Act against the BCL leader and his accomplice Rashedul Hasan. Rashed has gone into hiding.

After the incident, all officers and employees of the PWD office observed work abstention yesterday demanding punishment to the accused.

In the case statement, Executive Engineer Noor Islam alleged that BCL leader Saidul Islam Babu along with his accomplice Rashedul Hasan entered his office room at around 1:45pm and asked him to give him the tender of a project. "As I refused to meet the demand, they hurled abuse at me and ransacked my room," he stated in the statement.

A correspondent from Feni adds: Parashuram upazila BCL activists yesterday assaulted Project Implementation Officer (PIO) Iqbal Hasan and confined him to his office room, bringing allegations of wrongdoing in lottery of a tender involving Tk 20 lakh against him.

Being informed, UNO Arif Ahmed Khan and Officer-in-Charge Nizamuddin rushed to the spot and rescued the PIO.
