Nagorik Mancha
Representatives of civil society are about to launch a new organisation to act as a pressure group. Journalist Nurul Kabir is the main architect of the organisation and he is joined by Advocate Dr. Shahdeen Malek; Dhaka University's Law Department teacher Dr. Asif Nazrul; BRAC University's teacher of Economics and Social Science Dr. Piyash Karim and Barrister Rafiqul Haque.
New Age Editor Nurul Kabir and these like-minded persons have already held several meetings to discuss the aims and objectives of the organisation. According to sources among the initiators, this organisation will not have any political agenda. The name of the organisation hasn't been finalised as yet, though the names Nagorik Mancha, Nagorik Morcha and Nagorik Parishad are being mulled over. The organisation is to function as a pressure group concerning various significant social, financial and other state-related issues.
Dr. Asif Nazrul says, "I have attended two of these meetings, but I cannot say when this will be officially launched. This will basically be a civil society organisation. We want to do something different rather than restrict ourselves to roundtables and seminars. And this will certainly not be any political platform."
It had initially been heard that former student leader Mahmudur Rahman Manna would also be a part of this organisation, but later it was also reported that he would probably not be included due to objections from some of the concerned persons. The main objection was that he was a member of Awami League and would not be leaving the party either. As it is, Manna is a part of Chhatra League Foundation, the organisation of former Chhatra League leaders led by Nure Alam Siddiqui. Thus his joining the new organisation.
