ews24.com) The first batch of first Bangladesh-made laptops will go to government officials.

Manufactured by the state-run Telephone Shilpa Sangstha (TSS), the 'Doel', named after the national bird, will be out on Oct 15.

"It will be given to the administration and it will hit the market afterwards," head of the parliamentary standing committee on telecom ministry, Hasanul Haque Inu, told reporters after a meeting on Wednesday.

He could not specify a date by which the home-made Doel would be available on the shelves, however.

He said prime minister Sheikh Hasina would officially inaugurate Doel before Oct 15 while a statement from the parliamentary secretariat said she would launch the laptop on Oct 11.

The Tk 1.48-billion project's trial run began at a TSS factory in Gazipur on July 8.

The project is being implemented in collaboration with the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Malaysian firm Thin Film Transistor (TFT) and other foreign experts. Sixty percent of the laptop parts, including the motherboard, will be manufactured in the factory.

After its release, four brands of Doel laptops will be sold, ranging between Tk 10,000 and Tk 25,000.

The government is hoping that foreign manufacturers would have to reduce their prices once Doel hits the market.

At Wednesday's meeting, the committee also asked TSS to start manufacturing mobile phones as early as possible.

A three-strong sub-committee was also formed during the meeting to investigate the illegal VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol or internet telephony) activities of mobile operators, gateways and PSTN operators.

About issuing the International Terrestrial Cable (ITC) licence, committee chief Inu said, "The licence will be given according to the rules and regulations. Transparency on the matter will be ensured."

On Tuesday, telecommunications minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju had said that the government decided to issue licences to six private firms although the regulations stipulate that the regulator, meaning BTRC, may issue three licences while the government reserved the right to reduce that number.
