A judicial commission has found 26,352 persons including 25 ministers and law makers of the past BNP-Jamaat alliance government involved in the 2001 post-poll violence.

Disclosing the findings at a press briefing at her office on Thursday, Home Minister Shahara Khatun said the government will file cases against such offenders if the victims do not dare to sue them. She made the disclosure around seven months after the commission submitted its investigation report to her on April 24.

Shahara said over 18,000 incidents of major crimes including killings, rapes, arsons and lootings by the cadres of the then ruling BNP-Jamaat alliance in 15 months since October, 2001, took place. She said, "The commission considered 3,625 complaints of major offences against a total of 5,571 lodged with it."

Commission sources said of the incidents, 355 are politically motivated murders while 3,270 included rapes, arsons, lootings and such other atrocities. The accused former ministers are Altaf Hossain Choudhury, Matiur Rahman Nizami, Tariqul Islam, Hafijuddin Ahmed, Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu and Abdus Salam Pintu.

"Many victims sought financial help to the commission which it mentioned to its report. The government will also give financial help to the victims as per its capacity," she said.

The commission members visited the spots of atrocities, collected evidence, took photographs and collected details of the accused and the victims with the help of the local authorities. The three-member commission was formed on December 27, 2009, to probe the atrocities against minorities and supporters of the then opposition parties after the 2001 polls.Headed by retired district judge Mohammad Sahabuddin, the commission includes Deputy Secretary to the home ministry Monowar Hossain Akand and Special Superintendent of Criminal Investigation Department Mir Shahidul Islam. The HC had directed the government to form a judicial commission following a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh on May 6, 2009.
