Re: [mukto-mona] Jhor (The Storm), a great Bangla classic movie

Thank you, Ms. Chakraborty, for liking this movie and for your respect for Henry Derozio. I am posting the link again for the convenience of anyone who may want to watch it.

The Hindus of contemporary India are clearly better than what their foreparents were in 1830. But I do see the contemporary Hindus as too backward and worthlessly hateful.

The Hindus still identify themselves in terms of the caste system. In the 21st century, there are still a lot of places in India where there are prohibitions on the so-called low caste Hindus in the temples. While a small fraction of Hindus have progressed enough to allow inter-caste marriage, even that more improved fraction has very few who have progressed enough to reject the caste-based identity.

While today's Hindus do not burn their widows in the funeral pyres of their dead husbands, their societies still treat women as inferior to men, as evidenced by the literacy rates (among all Indians: 73% for men, 48% for women, as found in the CIA World Factbook; I am guessing that it could be a bit better among the Hindus). Even among the better educated Hindus, there are still a lot of cases where fetuses are aborted because they were female (even when it is illegal).

India and its Hindus still have a lot of work to do for claiming themselves to be truly civilized.

A lots of thanks to Sukhamaya Bain for posting such a beautiful & moral movie here! I love this movie from my heart, & I believe that everyone should watch this movie in order to wake up patriotism & moral lessons which seem to be reduced from present India. If we can obey Mr. Derozio as our idol we will surely be benefited in all aspects!
