The point is that Azad was not attacked for his "vulgar" writings. Motive was much deeper. The attacker was a fanatic militant and politically a rightist element too. This fact is significant in helping us in understanding the psyche of the a significant part of our educated class. Vulgarity or obscenity in literature is a controversial matter. Many books in different languages were banned for obscenity. That a book was banned does not mean it is a badly written book. Syed shamsul Huq's "Boishake rochito pongktimala", Samaresh Basu's "Prajapati" or "Bibor" are great books written in innovative style although they all were once banned (not very sure about "Prajapati".) Buddhadeb Basu had to fight for "Bibor". "Bibor" is a great addition to the Bengali literature. Before we call a creative writer greedy, we should try to undrstand if the so called vulgarity or obscenity acted as a catlyst in expressing the ideas that the author wanted to offer.

Humayun Azad, a Perverted Genius
Before he suffered the deadly attack on his life in the Bangla Academy Book Fair in late February this year and became overnight internationally famous I hardly knew about Dr. Humayun Azad. I only heard his name as the author of a the then proscribed Bangla book "Nari". A few weeks before the attack on him his publisher Mr. Osman Ghani, whom I came to know by chance, presented me the book "Nari" with a request to read it. From the cover I found the book was republished after wining a legal battle after it had suffered a state ban on it for more than four years for being obscene. For an old man like me ( I will be 60 on my next birthday !) an alleged obscene book could not naturally be an interesting reading. However I brought the book home and tried to read it. Let me confess, I could not even finish reading the first chapter. Each paragraph was full of juicy and vulgar description of the female human genital sandwiched by high sounding theories on social relationship between man and woman throughout ages. The theories quoted, the language and the presentation, all prove that Dr. Azad was a very learned scholar with a superb literary flair. But unfortunately I could not finish the first chapter of the book, because my sense of values and the taste I picked up from my middle class Muslim family background and my school teachers did not allow me go through the book. Luckily a very young visitor did me a great favor by quietly lifting the book from table! I felt happy and did not ask anyone about it.Then came the news of fatal attack on Dr. Azad. I know someone who being a colleague of his knows Dr. Azad very well. He told me that academically Dr. Azad was one of the very outstanding products of the Bangla Department of DU with a first class career all along. I asked him why was such a brilliant scholar like Dr. Azad had been indulging in writing vulgar books like the "Nari"? His great talent could be used to carry out research in Bangla language and literature. He admitted that he did not know the right answer to my question. But while leaving he remarked that, may be, to earn more and more money Dr. Azad had been abusing his talent. By the by he asked me if I had read Dr. Azad's latest book "Pak Sar Zameen Saad Bad". I said no. He advised me to read some paragraphs of the said book that were quoted in a local Bangla daily (The Daily Inqilab) early that week to understand the present mind-set of the professor. I collected the daily and tried to read the quotations. To my shock and horror I found it was hundred times more vulgar than "Nari". Taslima's "Ka" would run away in shame from "Nari". I could not even finish reading the first paragraph quoted. Dr. Azad wanted to condemn the atrocities committed by the Pakistani soldiers and the local Razakars on the Hindu population of the then East Pakistan during our Great War of Liberation in 1971. Well, there cannot be a second opinion in the mind of any Bangladeshi about the importance and the necessity of such condemnations to make our present and future generations aware of our national history of that period. But then a man does not physically bite back a dog if he is bitten by it. A man can always adopt many a descent course, without compromising his rationality and greatness as a man, to expose the beastly action of the dog. I very strongly feel Dr. Azad has measurably let him down himself as a scholar, as a university teacher and, finally, as a father. I really feel sorry for his two daughters (shown on TV) who has been made to bear with their father's obscene writings.)I call Dr. Humayun Azad a perverted genius. Well, if anyone who does not agree with me, I shall request him, if he can read Bangla, to read the book "Pak Sar Zameen Saad Bad". And after having read the book if one feels it is a great peace of literature (or history) one should read it aloud in the presence of his parents, children, students and in public gatherings to preach the greatness of the book. And then a nationwide movement can be started to prescribe the book as a textbook in our schools and colleges. I for one will appreciate the guts of these people, be they intellectuals or politicians of any shade or color.Thanks to Allah, those who wanted to kill him could not kill Dr. Azad. We do not yet know who did it. If the so-called Islamic fundamentalists, as claimed by Dr. Azaad himself, did it they definitely acted against the teachings of Islam as given the Qur'an. The Qur'an allows the killing of a man (or woman) only under two circumstances. First, one can kill one's enemy on the battlefield while fighting is on. Second, a person can be executed for committing a serious offence after the process of law is duly followed. There is no other third justification to kill a human being by any power on earth.I thank Begum Khaleda Zia and her government for arranging all necessary treatment for the perverted professor inside and outside the country. At the same time I call upon our social scientists, psychologists to suggest means and ways to the society and the government how we can spot geniuses like Dr. Azad at an early stage and nip the perversion in them in the bud. I pray to Allah so that Dr. Azad is fully cured and safely returns to Bangladesh leaving his perverted mind in the Bangkok hospital. But you wouldn't expect LOGIC from one who believes in the existence of Bakshal lurking behind every person who refuses to believe in his lies.As for the vicious liar Ayi Bahar on Humayun Azad, almost every bit of information he indulged on is slanderous and proven falsehood. Humayun was, to the utter dismay of his enemy camp, a very popular teacher at DU. His students, men and women, really loved him. He was not known as a drunken slob, and was not a womanizer kind that is quite common in the 'antel' circle of Dhaka. The current VC, Prof. Arefin, Humayun's former colleague, once spoke of Humayun's popularity among his students resting on his moral integrity, his fearlessness about speaking the truth rather than on any other pretensions. Humayun Azad's scholarly contribution towards the field of Bangla language and liguistic studies is really enormous and perhaps second only to Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah. He has several books of his own research findings besides being the editor of a 2-vol collection of essays on Bangla language over a period of 100 years. Altogether he was the author of more than 75 books by the time of his untimely death. Abid Bahar introducing his concocted bullshit about Humayun with a quote from John Donne's famous sermon at St Paul is truly nauseating since it soon becomes apparent that Ayi Bahar is quite happy about Humayun's demise, and may very well have been closely associated with the group who organized the chapati assault on Humayun on 25th February, 2004. বিশেষ প্রতিনিধি | তারিখ: ০৮-০৩-২০১২বিরোধী দলের মহাসমাবেশের আগে রাজনৈতিক শক্তি দেখাল ক্ষমতাসীন আওয়ামী লীগ। গতকাল বুধবার রাজধানীতে আয়োজিত গণশোভাযাত্রায় ছিল মানুষের ঢল। ঐতিহাসিক ৭ মার্চ উপলক্ষে এই কর্মসূচির আয়োজন করা হলেও রাজপথে দলীয় অবস্থান সুসংহত করাই ছিল এর মূল লক্ষ্য।শোভাযাত্রা শুরুর আগে ইঞ্জিনিয়ার্স ইনস্টিটিউশন-সংলগ্ন সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যানের সামনে বিশাল জমায়েতে প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা বলেন, রাজাকার ও যুদ্ধাপরাধীদের বাঁচাতে বিরোধীদলীয় নেতা আন্দোলনে যাচ্ছেন। কিন্তু তিনি তাদের বাঁচাতে পারবেন না। বাংলার মাটিতে তাদের বিচার হবেই। প্রধানমন্ত্রী বলেন, আইএসআইয়ের (পাকিস্তানের গোয়েন্দা সংস্থা) কাছ থেকে পাঁচ কোটি রুপি নিয়ে খালেদা জিয়া ১৯৯১ সালে নির্বাচন করেছেন। পরাজিত শক্তির কাছ থেকে তিনি টাকা নিয়েছেন। এর জবাব জনগণকে দিতে হবে। বিকেল সোয়া পাঁচটায় সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যানের সামনে প্রধানমন্ত্রী গণশোভাযাত্রার উদ্বোধন করেন। শাহবাগ, এলিফ্যান্ট রোড, সায়েন্স ল্যাবরেটরি ও কলাবাগান হয়ে শোভাযাত্রাটি ধানমন্ডির বঙ্গবন্ধু ভবনে গিয়ে শেষ হয়। ঢাকা মহানগরের ১৫টি নির্বাচনী এলাকা, ৪১টি থানা ও ৯২টি ওয়ার্ড ছাড়াও পার্শ্ববর্তী নারায়ণগঞ্জ, গাজীপুর, নরসিংদী, মানিকগঞ্জ ও মুন্সিগঞ্জ থেকে মিছিলের স্রোত এসে মেশে ঐতিহাসিক সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যানের সামনে। সুবিশাল এই গণশোভাযাত্রায় আওয়ামী লীগের নেতাদের কণ্ঠে ধ্বনিত হয়েছে, 'বঙ্গবন্ধুর হত্যাকারীদের বিচার হয়েছে, বাংলার মাটিতে যুদ্ধাপরাধীদেরও বিচার হবে। রায় কার্যকর হবে। একাত্তরের ঘাতকদের কোনো ক্ষমা নেই।' নেতাদের এমন ঘোষণায় হাজার হাজার মানুষের উৎফুল্লতা ও হর্ষধ্বনি সবার দৃষ্টি কাড়ে। দুপুর ১২টা থেকেই নগরের বিভিন্ন এলাকা থেকে সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যানের সামনে মিছিল আসতে থাকে। বেলা সাড়ে তিনটার মধ্যেই প্রেসক্লাব থেকে মৎস্য ভবন হয়ে শাহবাগ মোড় ও ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় এলাকা লোকে লোকারণ্য হয়ে যায়। এ ছাড়া পশ্চিমে নিউমার্কেট, পূর্বে পল্টন মোড়, উত্তরে কাকরাইল ও দক্ষিণে বঙ্গবাজার পর্যন্ত মিছিল ছড়িয়ে যায়। সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যান ও রমনা পার্কের ভেতরেও বিপুল মানুষ অবস্থান নেয়। শহরজুড়ে দেখা দেয় তীব্র যানজট। এই কর্মসূচিকে ঘিরে ব্যাপক নিরাপত্তামূলক ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হয়। সকাল থেকেই শাহবাগ মোড় ও মৎস্য ভবন মোড়ে ব্যারিকেড দেয় পুলিশ। নেতা-কর্মীদের আর্চওয়ে (নিরাপত্তা ফটক) দিয়ে মূল মঞ্চে প্রবেশ করতে হয়। গণশোভাযাত্রায় আওয়ামী লীগ ও এর সহযোগী সংগঠনের হাজার হাজার নেতা-কর্মী-সমর্থক ছাড়াও অসংখ্য সাধারণ মানুষকে অংশ নিতে দেখা যায়। ঢাকা সিটি করপোরেশন উত্তর ও দক্ষিণের নির্বাচন সামনে রেখে মেয়র ও ওয়ার্ড কাউন্সিলর পদে মনোনয়ন পেতে ইচ্ছুক ব্যক্তিদের হাজার হাজার মানুষ নিয়ে মিছিল ছিল চোখে পড়ার মতো। ঢাকা মহানগর থেকে নির্বাচিত সাংসদেরাও মিছিল নিয়ে শোভাযাত্রায় যোগ দেন। রং-বেরঙের বেলুন, ব্যানার, প্ল্যাকার্ড, ফেস্টুন, ট্রাক, হাতি, ঘোড়ার গাড়ি, নৌকা, দলীয় ও জাতীয় পতাকা, বঙ্গবন্ধু ও শেখ হাসিনার বিশাল প্রতিকৃতিসহ বিভিন্ন সাজে সজ্জিত হয়ে ব্যান্ডের তালে তালে শোভাযাত্রায় যোগ দেন নেতা-কর্মীরা। ডামি রাইফেল, কামান, ট্যাংকসহ মুক্তযুদ্ধকালীন মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের রণসজ্জা, পাকিস্তানি হানাদার বাহিনী ও রাজাকার-আলবদর-আলশামসের আত্মসমর্পণ, বিভিন্ন প্রতীকী প্রদর্শনী সাধারণ মানুষের বাড়তি মনোযোগ আকর্ষণ করে। একটি প্ল্যাকার্ডে যুদ্ধাপরাধের দায়ে আটক ব্যক্তিদের ব্যঙ্গচিত্রের নিচে লেখা ছিল, 'বন্যেরা বনে সুন্দর, রাজাকারেরা পাকিস্তানে'। মন্ত্রী ও আওয়ামী লীগের জ্যেষ্ঠ নেতারা পায়ে হেঁটে শোভাযাত্রায় অংশ নেন। সমাবেশ: শোভাযাত্রা শুরুর আগে সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যানের সামনের সমাবেশে প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা বলেন, মার্চ স্বাধীনতার মাস। বিরোধী দল এই মাস বেছে নিয়েছে যুদ্ধাপরাধীদের বাঁচাতে। তবে জনগণ তা মেনে নেবে না। বিরোধীদলীয় নেতার উদ্দেশে প্রধানমন্ত্রী বলেন, 'উনি তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকার চান? উনি ভুলে গেছেন, তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকারের জেল-জুলুম ও নির্যাতনের কথা? তাঁর দুই ছেলেকে নির্যাতন করে বিদেশে পাঠিয়ে দেওয়ার কথা? উনি কি ভাবছেন, তত্ত্বাবধায়ক এলে তাঁকে কোলে তুলে নিয়ে ক্ষমতায় বসাবে? এবার তত্ত্বাবধায়ক এলে তাঁর দুই ছেলেকে ধরে এনে জেলে ভরবে।' সভাপতির বক্তব্যে সৈয়দা সাজেদা চৌধুরী বলেন, বেগম জিয়ার কাছে প্রতি মাসে পাকিস্তান থেকে টাকা আসে। আমির হোসেন আমু বলেন, আওয়ামী লীগকে আন্দোলনের ভয় দেখিয়ে লাভ হবে না। আন্দোলন কী, কত প্রকার তা আওয়ামী লীগ ভালো করেই জানে। তোফায়েল আহমেদ বলেন, শেখ হাসিনার নেতৃত্বে ঘরে ঘরে দুর্গ গড়ে তুলতে হবে, ষড়যন্ত্রকারীদের বিরুদ্ধে গর্জে উঠতে হবে। আওয়ামী লীগের সাধারণ সম্পাদক সৈয়দ আশরাফুল ইসলাম বিরোধী দলের উদ্দেশে বলেন, 'সংসদে আসুন। আগামী নির্বাচন কীভাবে হবে, তার সুনির্দিষ্ট প্রস্তাব দিন। আলোচনায় যেকোনো সমস্যা সমাধান করা যায়। যুক্তরাষ্ট্র, যুক্তরাজ্য, ভারত আমাদের সমস্যা সমাধান করতে পারবে না।' সুরঞ্জিত সেনগুপ্ত খালেদা জিয়ার উদ্দেশে বলেন, '১২ মার্চ সমাবেশ করে আওয়ামী লীগের সঙ্গে সুবিধা করতে পারবেন না।' সমাবেশে আরও বক্তব্য দেন মতিয়া চৌধুরী, শেখ ফজলুল করিম সেলিম, লতিফ সিদ্দিকী, মোহাম্মদ নাসিম, মাহবুব উল আলম হানিফ, এম এ আজিজ, মোফাজ্জল হোসেন চৌধুরী প্রমুখ। পাঠকের মন্তব্য
