Two former generals stood trial in Ankara on Wednesday for their roles in Turkey's violent 1980 military coup. Kenan Evren, 94, the former head of the army, and Tahsin Sahinkaya, 86, the former air force commander, who were absent because of poor health, face charges of staging a coup to overthrow the civilian government, punishable by life imprisonment. The coup was the most violent of the three military interventions in modern Turkey: 50 people were executed, 300 were killed in prisons and more than half a million were arrested, according to human rights groups. The generals are unlikely to be jailed because of their age and health.
