I appreciate your liberal view: doubting is not a sin. That means it is all right to be a skeptic for entire life. Then we cannot have any problems in this world regarding religious belief.
No, I hate insulting a person who is religious. Even I hate to make fun of them. I never do that. I respect what they do. This summer one of my Muslim students in one of my classes had her cell-phone alarm set with Azaan. She used to forget to turn it off. When it went off the entire class would stop for a second with curiosity. There is cell phone policy and the girl used to get embarrassed. I know what the sound means. I used to smile. It never went off the third time.

Are religions, religious scriptures and prophets of religion not sacred and is it not a sin to express doubts in them?
>>>>>> Even most devout people have times of their lives when they "Doubt". Because our lives in this world gives us many challenges (Often known as "Tests" to Muslims). Still having 'Doubt" is different than insulting/offending other groups.
If you are sitting among 10 people from Chittagong and 3 others from Kolkata. If the "Kolkata" man wants to make a wise crack against how people of Chittagong speaks "Bangla", their is a slight chance the people from Chittagong would be "Offended". Because that "Bangla" is mother tongue to them.
However if someone simply discuss different dialect of Bangla, it is less likely that, anyone would be offended.
The main problem is we don't respect each other or different point of views. As much most of the us seek tolerance in others, we (Most of us) are mostly intolerant bunch!!
I was very disturbed to read a news where some minority (Read Hindu) properties were burnt in Dinajpur. The only thing our current administration did was to blame BNP for it, albeit this incident had no political dimension. It was an utter failure of law and order. So these poor Hindus became "Political football" one more time by the very people they voted in!!
Now I am sure some of my fellow members would be very disturbed/sad about this incident. However I am not so sure the same set of people would express similar concern when Rohingas was murdered en mass and we are turning these people back into hell hole!!
Secular and atheist people speaks about "Humanity" a lot but in practice (At least from my experience in this forum) they are as bias (Most of them) as others.
Now going back to 'Criticizing" religion. I don't think people get offended when someone "Doubts" God but they get offended when God is mocked, insulted etc.
As long we clean up our acts, rest will follow. As I have said many times, I enjoy sincere doubters but I have less tolerance for hate-mongers.
I thank God that, I don't get disturbed "Selectively". I am equally disturbed and distressed when I hear about Dinajpur and when I learn about state of Rohingas in Myanmar. To me that is the definition of Humanity and definition of a believer. So no conflict with religion and ideas about "Humanity" in my world.
Shalom!

One of the dictionary (Mirriam-Webster) meanings of "blasphemy" is "Irreverence towards something considered sacred or inviolable". I have used my own words to decribe the term. Am I really too far fom the dictionary meaning? Are religions, religious scriptures and prophets of religion not sacred and is it not a sin to express doubts in them?
Prof. Das is righ. Brave hearts have challenged them although not with great risks and that's why world has not stopped.

The word 'blasphemy' is being thrown around recklessly. It should not be used so callously and broadly as Mr. Chakraborty did. --- On Wed, 8/1/12, Kamal Das <kamalctgu@gmail.com> wrote:
