Even with my 'less than average intelligence' I understand that the gist of secularism is the idea of keeping state separate from religion/religious institutions. It does not have any conflict with an individual's personal belief in religion. I don't know Ms. Majid personally, I reached the conclusion on her by reading her posts. In personal life Mr. M. A. Jinnah was not at all religious, Maulana Azad was highly religious. Maulana Sahib stood for secular politics, Jinnah preached the opposite view. I don't believe 'modesty is the fig leaf of mediocrity'. I believe the opposite - big number of the braggers are either ignorant or suffer from inferiority complex or both. Regards, Received: Thursday, September 13, 2012, 5:02 PM Being a self acclaimed person of 'less than average intelligence', you should not know what is 'almost a universal truth'. However, it may be good for you to remember that 'Modesty is the fig leaf of mediocrity'. About your last posting on someone being secular, nobody can be so by remaining loyal to his/her religion and community. However the opposite - 'ovidya/kuvidya dadati oudhytta' is almost a universal truth. Regards, Received: Wednesday, September 12, 2012, 6:34 PM Vidya dadati vinayam was not invented by your teacher, and ain't universally true. If you haven't noticed, none of the renowned philosopher was modest. Many were even involved in burning the heretics alive. I read everyone's writing in this forum. To me it seems that she is a highly secular and progressive person with strong believe in the spirit of Muktijuddho, Anyone 'should stop bragging on her grasp on anything and do a little more homework, otherwise her ignorance will be exposed' - it is true for more than one person in this forum. Vidya dadati vinayang (true only for real vidyans) - firstime I heard it was (when I was in class IV or V) from Mr. Nirod Vihari Chowdhury (do not remember how he actually spelled his name) , Headmaster of Prabartak Vidyapith, Chittagong in '60s. Nirod-da was like a father to us. Received: Tuesday, September 11, 2012, 5:04 PM Only a stupid closet fundamentalist and a pro-Pakistani like Ms. Majid could do such idiotic posting. I carry a Bangla name, but never preach Hinduism. I don't even believe that there ever existed a religion called Hinduism and avoid all religious festivals. The Persians called the brown skinned people on the south Hindus, and even Sir Syed Ahmed Khan called himself a Hindu by culture and a Muslim in religion. Ms. Majid should stop bragging on her grasp on anything and do a little more homework, otherwise her ignorance will be exposed. | | |
