[mukto-mona] Re: US concerned over recent violence ...

Does not USA know why the Jamaati violence is going on? Doesn't it know that the Jamaatis are demanding release of the war criminals of '71? As a champion of democracy and freedom of people USA should unequivocally support the trial of the war criminals. Not only that it should it should proactively help the Bangladesh govt. Unfortunately it is not happening.

Dhaka, Nov 15 (bdnews24.com) – The United States on Thursday expressed concern over the recent violence in Bangladesh as Jamaat-e-Islami activists clashed with law enforcers in Dhaka and other cities and it suggested holding 'dialogue to resolve differences'.

In a statement it said, "The United States Embassy is concerned by the recent violence that has taken place in Dhaka and other cities in Bangladesh. Our thoughts go out to those who have been injured or suffered damage to private property as a result of this violence."

"The ability to engage in peaceful protest is a fundamental democratic right; there is no justification for the resort to violence. We believe dialogue is the best means for resolving differences," the US embassy added.

Activists of Jamaat and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir have been clashing with police in the capital, Dhaka, and elsewhere in the country since Nov 5 demanding release of the detained top Jamaat leaders facing trial for allegedly committing war crimes during 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.

Shibir men allegedly set a policeman on fire in outskirts of Joypurhat on Monday. They also pounced on Law Minister's motorcade on Tuesday. The minister narrowly escaped unhurt, but two cars of the convoy were vandalised by the unruly Shibir activists. The attackers also beat up a police sergeant before setting his bike ablaze.

On Wednesday, Home Minister M K Alamgir claimed of having proof that 'other parties' were involved in the rampages throughout the country.

Opposition BNP on Wednesday, protested against the Minister's remarks stating the party was not to be blamed for Jamaat's actions.

The government is saying Jamaat activists have resorted to attacks on police to stop the war crimes trial, while Jamaat alleges the clashes were the results of police's obstruction to their political programmes.
