Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said corruption cases are being probed because the Awami League is power while reacting to allegations of irregularities leveled against her.

She said this in Parliament on Saturday when the opposition raked up the Hall-Mark group's loan scam. "Hall-Mark's Tanvir is a man of Hawa Bhaban. He belongs to Zia Parishad," she said.

"We are being called thieves for catching thieves." Hasina added.

The Prime Minister said the Padma Bridge project financing had been made to hinge on a bank MD's quitting or sticking to his post.

"We received a threat regarding this MD's staying or going in connection with the funding of the Padma Bridge project. We will not heed to such threats, we will not have the people bow to them," Hasina said.

She said that, as the daughter of Bangabandhu, she would not let the question of one man's post to trifle with the fate of millions in the southern part of the country.

Sheikh Hasina did not elaborate, but added, "I will say more when the time comes."

"A lot of powerful nations had opposed us during the time of the Liberation War. They sent over the Seventh Fleet, but they couldn't stop us from being liberated," she said.

About the opposition's criticism of the government over an alleged 'conspiracy of corruption' in the Padma Bridge project, the Prime said, "My family has been much maligned. You have talked about commission. Who took that commission?" she asked.

"We left all allocations intact and secured funds for the bridge so that the people can keep their heads high."

Sheikh Hasina mentioned the government's initiatives to lift the capital market and fight corruption, "Whatever money was looted from the banks have gone into the capital market. I will ask the leader of the opposition to catch her favourites Falu and Badal. Then we will know where the money from the share market went."

The Leader of the opposition who spoke before her had accused the government of corruption and abusing the rights of opposition leaders and activists.

The Prime Minister addressed the BNP chief saying, "Money and love can't be hidden away…Get back the money laundered by one son and we will get back what the other one stole."

"Power generation did not increase by one megawatt while the BNP was in power. People did not get electricity, they just got Khamba (electric posts)."

Khaleda Zia had said the opposition was denied the post of the Deputy Speaker despite promises but Hasina restored saying, "They did not provide any names. We gave them the proposal as soon as we formed our government."
