Most Madrassas now a days do teach students other subjects. Reciting the Qurán is a specialized field in Islamic education. If one learns to recite the Qurán, that does NOT stop them from being a physicist. Many of Bengali Muslim scholars came from Madrassa back ground.
Having said this, I also support you. I always felt more resources should be allowed to madrassa students ( I have been saying this for a while). So they learn about computer, science and philosophy as well.

They have very little scope of exploring the outside world. They can only come out when they are grown up. After that - nothing can be done about these people; communists used to follow this technique also.
Last night, I saw a part of the speech of the famous NTV chairman/owner, who was inaugurating the month-long Quran recitation competition in the NTV channel. I saw some of the kids, hardly 10 years old, could recite Quran without opening the book, except - they don't understand what they are talking about; they are just like bunch of parrots. NTV Chairman was moved by the parotic-skill of these kids. He was encouraging other kids to follow the footsteps of these kids.
I was extremely disappointed to hear such statements from a highly successful as well as powerful Bangladeshi, who can do so much good for the poor and downtrodden people, especially kids. He has done splendid job with the cultural, talent, and talk shows. I was expecting him to encourage Madrassa administrators to make these kids mater of other trades of life as well as they did in the Quran recitation to make them complete human being. He knows full well what type of success is ahead of most of these kids, yet - he was promoting them a model for other kids, except his own, obviously. It was totally disingenuous; he knows better from his own life story. How could he promote such a life-style as the model for other kids is beyond my understanding?
