Re: [mukto-mona] মন্তব্যের জন্য ক্ষমা চাইবেন না অমর্ত্য

The aim of this response is not to undermine the crimes committed by Modi who is the focus of of our discussion.

Neither Modi nor Khaleda (post election pogrom 2001) nor Gholam Azam shot a single bullet nor set a house on fire nor raped any one. But each one of them was a villain. Neither Khaleda nor Modi has been brought to justice. Modi, a shrewd politician, managed to find some scape goats one being a woman leader of his own party. Gholam Azam has been brought to justice after 42 years thanks to AL's determination to try the criminals. Khaleda will never have to face trial. Was there any arrests after the pogrom of 2001? Bhutto was punished for a different reason, not for killing Bengalis. Tikka Khan remained untouched. Justice has as a matter of fact fled to brutish beasts.

Khaleda is at best a Muslim nationalist. Bhutto was a power hungry leader without any defined political character. Tikka was at best a hired hit man. But crimes of Modi and Gholam Azam are rooted in religious supremacy having far reaching effects on civilization.

"I also think that it was OK for Professor Sen to say that he would return it if Atal Bihari Vajpayee asked it back."

May I know what the justification behind this comment is?
Let me ask you also - why didn't he decline to receive the medal and the title from Atal Bihari Vajpei if he was so allergic to this award?

As I said before, not supporting Modi is his legitimate right. But, being an academician and a Nobel Laureate, he should know better. The riot in Gujrat was the result of a statewide spontaneous mob outbreak from both sides, which resulted 31,000 arrests throughout the state, 80% were Hindus. Total 140 killed in Police firing, 80 of them were Hindus. In the first 3 days 100 were killed, 70 were Hindus. Let's remember, Indian communal riots are never one-sided. Prime Minister termed this disaster as a "National Shame." One BJP State Minister of Modi government has been hanged recently. Do you still think Modi and Indian government did not do enough? I believe - Modi is a victim of propaganda. Modi is banned from entry to USA as a result of propaganda campaign. Some people even compared him as Golam Azam of India. So on and so forth …

Educated people should not get carried away by propaganda; we need to make judgment based on perspectives. If we do, we will be the victim of propaganda also. I do not care about whoever becomes the Prime Minister of India; it's the business of Indians.

In contrast, I look at my own country. I have never seen nobody ever got punished for communal violence in Bangladesh. I am not aware of anybody ever got punished from the communal violence in Hazarihat, Chittagong also. I could be wrong.

I agree with Dr. Jiten Roy that getting a Nobel Prize in a subject does not make someone expert in everything else, and that Amartya Sen is a loose talker. Professor Sen certainly should have found out better in 2001 before talking religious harmony in Bangladesh. He did a gross disservice to his ancestral homeland at that time by portraying a religious fanatic government in an undeserving better light.

However, I think it was foolish of Chandan Mitra to ask for Professor Sen to return the Bharat Ratna title. I also think that it was OK for Professor Sen to say that he would return it if Atal Bihari Vajpayee asked it back. One receives an award from a secular Prime Minister does not mean that he has to respect a religious fanatic person who could be the Prime Minister next. Professor Sen did not have to respect Narendra Modi, even if he were actually elected Prime Minister by the Indian voters. Nor did he have to return a title given by an honorable government, just because the next government is likely to be despicable.

Let me be clear that BJP of India is much more secular than BNP of Bangladesh. However, it was too irresponsible of Modi to allow the Gujarat Riots of 2002. If a Muslim mob burned the train and so many passengers, Modi should have engaged his law enforcers to arrest and prosecute the criminals; he should not have allowed Hindu mobs to commit horrific crimes against innocent Muslims. That makes Modi unworthy of being the Prime Minister of a respectable India.
