Re: [mukto-mona] Sajeeb Wazed Joy: The Dark Life Behind The Scene

Dear Dr. Bain,

I am a Bangladeshi by birth and I would like to see the country prosper and live with honour and dignity. But when I see that figure of 3 million deaths in the liberation war, I cringe. I cringe because of the enormity of the lie and I cringe because of the failure of knowledgeable and erudite people like you to accept facts. Let me tell you the story (and it is absolutely true) behind the 3 million.

When Sheikh Mujibur Rahman came back to Dhaka from the Pakistani prison via London, he had been briefed by politicians, civil servants, diplomats, foreign dignitaries etc. A couple of days later he had to give interview with foreign journalists. He was told by his team that during the war as many as 3 lakhs (i.e. 300,000) of people died - a wild exaggeration by itself.
Then in the interview Sheikh Mujibur Rahman said that 3 million people had died; he thought the English of lakh is million! Once uttered by the 'father of the nation', nobody wanted to contradict or correct him. So this totally bonkers figure of 3 million got stuck. A more discerning person would not quote this figure at all. The actual figure, derived from statistical studies and from survey conducted during the 1970s, is more like 50,000 to 60,000 deaths. (You compare the death figure from the battle of Stalingrad, which was bloodiest battle of the WWII. Over 1 million Nazi (Axis) soldiers with 500 most advanced tanks and 600 aircrafts faced and fought with 1.2 million Red Army soldiers with 400 tanks and 350 aircrafts over a period of six months. The Stalingrad battle was the largest and bloodiest tank battle in the world, Stalingrad was literally demolished to ground, people lived in bunkers and sewage drains eating rats. The total death at the end of it all was 1.4 million. Does Sheikh Mujibur Rahman or her daughter want to say that more than double of that number of fatalities had happened in Bangladesh, although there were no large scale battles, no tank battles, no aircraft bombings, only local skirmishes?)

This attitude of falsifying facts or evidence from the top political figures and leaders of the society to, dare I say, the common people is symptomatic of Bangladesh's malaise. What the country needs is accountability and a high dose reality and common sense.

I do not think this kind of propaganda would help the cause of the fanatics who are doing it. Even if everything in the video were factual, it does not damage much of the so-called image of Bangladesh. For Awami League, Joy is not a candidate; he is working only for promoting that party.

Besides, what is the 'image of Bangladesh' in the outside world? For just one example, the country talks about 3 million murdered in 1971, yet does not punish any of the murderers in more than 40 years, nor does it secure compensation, or even an apology, from any of the murderers! With this kind of value the country giving to its 3 million lives, Bangladesh has no respectable image to people who care about the image of any country/society.

Well Bangladesh is a jungle; all sides are doing inappropriate things. But I think, with the IT skills of people like Joy, Awami League can deliver the patriotic fervor of 1971 to the nation, which would definitely help that party and its associated progressive allies.
