No organized religion by any specific name had been created yet at the time of King Bimbisara or before him. Vedas used to be scriptures and sacrifice of animals used to be practiced. Caste system had already been in the society. Kshatriyas and Brahmins used to dominate the society in every sphere. At one point another category called untouchables came into being. Every one did not have access to Vedas. So it is not true that there was absolute freedom of religion. 

It is a historical fact that King Bimbisara was killed by his own son Ajatashatru. Ajatashatru was so ambitious that he dethroned his own uncle and annexed his kingdom with his. 

Buddhism and Jainism received resistance from Brahmins although they could hardly do any thing to stop Ashoka from implementing his Dhamma which was based primarily on Buddhist principles.

Religion does not have an absolute form. Therefore, it does not matter what Hindus follow in the name of religion today or used to follow in the ancient time. Just like Islam and Abrahamic religions, modern Hindus are using religion as a part of politics also.

সবাইকে এক পথ অনুসরন করতে
হবে-প্রাচীন ভারতে এই ধরনের
ধর্মীয় অত্যাচারের চিহ্ন
এসেছে অনেক পরে। আদিতে সবার
মুক্তচিন্তার স্বাধীনতা
ছিল-সবাই নিজের মত করে জীবনের
উদ্দেশ্য খুঁজে নিত।
