When BNP/Jamat says they will come to the street to fight for democracy, they mean to fight for power.
First, BNP/Jamat talk about democracy, but, act against it. They have boycotted parliament and general election in the past. Not only that, they have done everything to stop the last general election; none of which shows any respect for democracy.
Second, there is nothing this current government is doing that is against the interest of Bangladesh and her people for which BNP/Jamat can demand for toppling the government. Toppling an elected government is warranted only when the government is proven to be a failed for the interest of the country. I do not see that. In fact, country's economic and developmental infrastructures have been growing at a satisfactory speed, perhaps better than India. Digital infrastructure has reached remote villages; food productions have been impressive.
Third, many of those achievements could not be possible if BNP/Jamat groups were allowed to continue their program of toppling the government through their so-called democratic rights, such as, Hortals, meaning disrupting government and non-government activities by force, meetings, demonstrations, disruptions, destructions of government properties, etc.
I can see clearly - what's in there for BNP/Jamat, if they can topple the government; BNP would go to power, unleash looting, and immediately start anti-Awami League, and anti-religious minority, campaigns, and Jamat would gain another chance to hoist Bangladeshi flag on their cars. What else in there for the people of Bangladesh? Only bunch of Bananas.
The bottom line is – Bangladesh has not been a developed democratic institution yet; people are not ready for full-fledged democracy. The country has not even decided on the national ideology; is it going to be a secular or Islamic country?
No sustained growth and prosperity is possible under fluctuating national ideologies between Awami League and BNP/Jamat.
Most importantly, can democracy work without secularism? If it cannot, can we trust BNP/Jamat to bring either secularism or democracy in Bangaldesh? It seems like - saving a hen from the fox, and asking a tiger to look after it.

'রক্তের বিনিময়ে স্বাধীনতা এনেছি, ক্ষমতায় এসেছি। আর রক্তের বিনিময়ে খালেদা-তারেককে সমুচিত জবাব দিতে চাই।' এমন মন্তব্য করেছেন ত্রাণমন্ত্রী ও ঢাকা মহানগর আওয়ামী লীগের সাধারণ সম্পাদক মোফাজ্জল হোসেন চৌধুরী মায়া। নেতা-কর্মীদের উদ্দেশে তিনি বলেন, 'হাতে থাকবে কী? যার যেটা আছে, তা নিয়েই থাকতে হবে।'
আজ বৃহস্পতিবার দুপুরে বঙ্গবন্ধু অ্যাভিনিউয়ে জয় বাংলা মুক্তিযোদ্ধা লীগ নামের এক সংগঠনের আলোচনা সভায় মায়া এসব কথা বলেন।মোফাজ্জল হোসেন চৌধুরী বলেন, 'সময় এসেছে জবাব দেওয়ার। আর চুপ করে বসে থাকলে হবে না। রক্তের বিনিময়ে স্বাধীনতা এনেছি, ক্ষমতায় এসেছি। আর রক্তের বিনিময়ে খালেদা-তারেককে সমুচিত জবাব দিতে চাই। তাঁদের কতটুকু জোর-ক্ষমতা, আমরা দেখতে চাই। টেলিভিশনে বসে মিথ্যাচার? আপনাদের (বিএনপি) আছে টেলিভিশন আর আমাদের আছে জনগণ।'
আওয়ামী লীগের এই নেতা বলেন, 'খালেদা জিয়া তাঁর ছেলেকে বাধা না দিয়ে উসকানি দিচ্ছেন। বাহবা দিয়ে আরও উচ্চকণ্ঠে মিথ্যাচার করছেন। এই ষড়যন্ত্রের জন্য মা-ছেলে দুজনই দায়ী। নতুনভাবে ষড়যন্ত্র শুরু করেছেন।' তিনি বলেন, 'আমরা বলি, ৫ জানুয়ারি গণতন্ত্র রক্ষা দিবস। আর তাঁরা নাকি ওই দিন ঢাকা শহর দখল করবেন। পরিষ্কার ঘোষণা দিতে চাই, এই ঢাকা মুক্তিযোদ্ধা ও শান্তিকামী মানুষের শহর। আল-বদর আর রাজাকারদের বাংলাদেশে জায়গা নাই। যারা এদের রক্ষা করে, তাদের ঢাকা শহরে দাঁড়াতে দেওয়া হবে না। ঢাকা শহর থাকবে শেখ হাসিনার কর্মীদের দখলে।'
