[mukto-mona] Fw: Bangladesh - a land of extreme contrasts [1 Attachment]

Hi,

Those mukto-mona readers who had recently been in despair that Saraswati Puja was not allowed to be celebrated in the Bangladesh Parliament House despite getting permission from the PM and the Speaker of the House can take solace from the following email I received today. It is indeed a great step that Dhaka University Departments are celebrating the occasion. I am feeling proud of my Alma Mater.

Subject: Bangladesh - a land of extreme contrasts

Folks,

I just made a short trip to Bangladesh. The country is now facing a never ending battle between the secularist Awami League led government and Islamist sympathizer opposition led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Not too long ago, hundreds of thousands of Islamists marched the capital city to topple the government.

A few days ago, my sister went to visit the Hindu community's Saraswati Puja festival in the Dhaka University. She saw there were sixty five Pratimas installed by all the departments of the university. Most amazing thing was the Saraswati statue provided by the Department of Islamic History and Culture of the University of Dhaka.  It is a rare instance of tolerance of other religions manifested in any Muslim majority country.

I thought only in Bangladesh such a phenomenon of composite culture can occur.
