This piece of news may have skipped the radar screen of many people, but it will influence politics in Bangladesh for quite some time to come. This is an ominous sign of autocratic practice. This and Manna's recent Skipe-talk show that undemocratic autocratic practices are very much popular in politics in Bangladesh. These incidences make me believe, Bangladesh is far away from democracy.
Another sign of autocratic practice, I see in the so-called Hartal/Strike, practiced by BNP alliance. Such Hartal is not a democratic right. I call this an imposed-Hartal, because - such practice requires subversive activities for its success. This type of political acts would be down-right illegal in any advanced countries. Then, why such behaviors are considered democratic rights in Bangladesh; do you know - why?
Political parties have the right to practice demonstration, work-stoppages, and civil disobedience, but they have no right to destroy public and government properties, and kill people during these exercises; that's anarchism. Then, why such behaviors are still being tolerated in the name of democratic rights in Bangladesh; do you know - why?
I know, opposition party, BNP, is denying its involvement in those subversive activities. Even if we believe in that claim, can this party also deny the involvement of the other 19 ancillary parties in its alliance in those subversive activities? They can't.
I also know, BNP blames government for these subversive activities, which is pretty silly. But, even if we assume that it is true, still the responsibility of all acts during the Hartal goes to BNP, since these acts are being done under the cover of the Hartal, called by BNP. The fact is - when there is Hartal, there are subversive activities. Then, why some so called talking-heads from civil groups on TV blame government, not BNP, for these acts; do you know - why?
The so-called civil society talking-heads on Bangladesh TVs only stress for election, not much on subversive acts. Do they know – which is more important issue for a prosperous country - election or stopping subversive activities? Do they understand that election is meaningless without the presence of democratic practices in the country. Iran, Pakistan, and many Middle-eastern countries have/had elections too. Does it mean existence of democracy there? Saddam used to have regular elections; we used to have election in the East Pakistan also.
I can't understand why leaders, intellectuals, academicians, and talking-heads on TVs do not espouse these views clearly in the public forum, and demand for establishing democratic practices in the country from all political parties? Why do they always project political party views in the public forums? Are they selfish, or, bankrupt, intellectually? Don't they have love for the country? I don't know, but such behavior either exposes their dishonesty or intellectual shallowness. It also exposes their professional incompetence to do the job, they are assigned to do.

প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার ছেলে সজীব ওয়াজেদ জয় ও তাঁর পরিবারের সদস্যদের অপহরণ করে বড় ধরনের ক্ষতির ষড়যন্ত্রের অংশ হিসেবে এফবিআইয়ের এক এজেন্টকে ঘুষ দেওয়ায় জড়িত থাকার দায়ে এক বাংলাদেশিসহ দুজনকে কারাদণ্ড দিয়েছেন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের একটি আদালত। মার্কিন বিচার বিভাগের বরাত দিয়ে আজ শনিবার বাংলাদেশ সংবাদ সংস্থা (বাসস) জানায়, জেলা জজ ভিনসেন্ট এল ব্রিকেটি গত বৃহস্পতিবার এই দণ্ডাদেশ দেন। দণ্ড পাওয়া দুজনই আদালতের কাছে নিজেদের অপরাধ ও ষড়যন্ত্রের কথা স্বীকার করেছেন।
কারাদণ্ড পাওয়া বাংলাদেশির নাম রিজভী আহমেদ সিজার (৩৬)। তাঁকে ৪২ মাস কারাদণ্ড দেওয়া হয়েছে। তাঁর বাবার নাম মোহাম্মদ উল্লাহ মামুন। তিনি বিএনপির সহযোগী সংগঠন জাসাসের সহসভাপতি। তাঁরা যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের কানেটিকাটের ফেয়ারফিল্ড কাউন্টির বাসিন্দা।
কারাদণ্ড পাওয়া অপর ব্যক্তি হলেন জোহান থালের (৫১। ঘুষ দেওয়ায় মধ্যস্থতাকারী এই মার্কিন নাগরিককে ৩০ মাসের কারাদণ্ড দেওয়া হয়েছে।
আদালতে দেওয়া স্বীকারোক্তিতে রিজভী দাবি করেন, বিএনপির উচ্চপর্যায় থেকে পাওয়া নির্দেশে এফবিআইয়ের একজন এজেন্টকে পাঁচ লাখ ডলার ঘুষের প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়ে জয়ের বিরুদ্ধে এই ষড়যন্ত্র বাস্তবায়নের উদ্যোগ নিয়েছিলেন তিনি।
থালের ও রিজভী উভয়েই স্বীকার করেন, ২০১১ সালের সেপ্টেম্বর থেকে শুরু করে ২০১২ সালের মার্চ মাসের মধ্যে জয়ের সম্পর্কে এফবিআইয়ের কাছে থাকা তথ্য পাচার করে দেওয়ার জন্য এফবিআইয়ের বিশেষ এজেন্ট রবার্ট লাস্টিকের সঙ্গে তাঁরা পাঁচ লাখ ডলারে চুক্তিবদ্ধ হন।
মার্কিন বিচার বিভাগ জানায়, এই চুক্তির আওতায় এফবিআইয়ের কাছে বিএনপি চেয়ারপারসন খালেদা জিয়ার বড় ছেলে তারেক রহমান ও ছোট ছেলে আরাফাত রহমান কোকোর অর্থ পাচারের যেসব তথ্য রয়েছে, তা-ও সরিয়ে ফেলার প্রতিশ্রুতি দেন ওই এজেন্ট।
ষড়যন্ত্র বাস্তবায়নের লক্ষ্যে থালের ও লাস্টিকের মধ্যে বার্তা বিনিময়ও হয়।
এফবিআইয়ের বিশেষ এজেন্ট লাস্টিককে প্রাথমিকভাবে ৪০ হাজার ডলার ঘুষও দেন থালের ও রিজভী। পুরো কাজ শেষ হওয়া পর্যন্ত লাস্টিককে প্রতি মাসে আরও ৩০ হাজার ডলার করে মোট পাঁচ লাখ ডলার দেওয়ার প্রতিশ্রুতিও দেওয়া হয়।
মামলার প্রধান আসামি এফবিআইয়ের বিশেষ এজেন্ট রবার্ট লাস্টিকের সাজার বিষয়ে শিগগিরই আদেশ দেবেন আদালত।

আদালতের রায়ের পর সিজারের বাবা মোহাম্মদ উল্লাহ মামুন টেলিফোনে বিডিনিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর ডটকমকে বলেন, "বিএনপির দুয়েকজনের বিশ্বাসঘাতকতার বলি হলো আমার ছেলে। এর বেশি কিছু বলতে চাই না।"
