[mukto-mona] Re: {NA Bangladeshi Community} Re: [BDPANA] Re: Zia the greatest patriot of our time

Dear me, these posts are merely opinions of people. They are not articles. It is inexcusable for an important BNP person not knowing the simple difference. No, I am not surprised. If an illiterate can run the party, why the cadres would be any different?
Sir, BNP doesn hold any monopoly on historical facts. Your main problem is that Zia came to the power with the aid of murders and guns.  That is not a typical characteristic of a true democrat. Please study political science and history of democracy. Thank you.

Subject: Zia the Greatest Patriot of Our Time

Can there be any better article on Zia, his period of time, his life, his role for the start of the Liberation War, and the introduction of the multiparty democracy in Bangladesh after liberation than what what has been written by Mr. Tanvir Nowaz, Dr. Moazzam Hossain Kazi, Brigadier General Ibrahim(Retd.) (not on this thread, but on the last 7th November Revolution and Solidarity Day celebration) and read in the New England BNP by our dear Haque Bhai of Lowell, and also extracts cited by Mr. Azad Khan. These are all history and facts. If anyone does not read or believe, he does not believe any history. How can he be regarded as educated or enlightened ? I am really perplexed about them. Only Rabindranath or Rabindra Sangeet will not do, although I am not against Rabindra Sangeet. They are beating the drum again and again that Zia has killed Mujib. Then, what Mushtaq, Dalim or Farooq did? Sohrab or Prof. Yusuf Ali?

I tell one thing I know. Even Khaled Mosharraf was not happy with the things what was going on at that time in '73, '74. In one private occasion of a wedding like "Gaye Halud" at Kalabagan, the persons who saw him inside the house, when came back, everybody asked them what was his opinion about the country? They replied he(Khaled Mosharraf) does not want to say or open his mouth, but said that things were not running well at all, that means, even with the policies of the government, and might be in the Cantonment. I took, he referred about the government, because the question to him was about the state of affairs of the government.

Zia came as a savior of the country, democracy, nation-building,and mobilizing the nation. Everything he did--- initiated, executed/implemented, accomplished; it was with the overwhelming/ massive support of the common people/ ordinary men/bureaucrats/lawyers/ teachers/ professors/ journalists/labors/ workers/ coolies/ rickshaw-pullers/ defense people, etc. How did he accomplish it? I don't know fully, but his honesty, sincerity, tenacity of purpose, patriotism, hard work, free from nepotism and favoritism, free from corruption, and being guided by justice and fair play on the rules. His only aim was the good/ welfare of the country, for which millions still love him.

See some legendary stories of his life:

Once, a Captain was accused of crossing the roads on foot at the Farm Gate, avoiding the over-bridge and fined by the Traffic Surgeon, and finally it was referred to Zia. Zia rebuked the Captain for violation of the law.

Tareq Zia could be sent to any Cadet Colleges by any other father President but Zia, because he was above nepotism.

Once, Zia was away from the country, and the Fountain was renovated by the D.C., on return, he ordered to demolish. What a lesson for the D.C. and the Madam.

He used to advise his party workers to smoke indigenous cigarettes instead of 555.

He asked his party workers to have short hair  instead of long hair like Zatra Artists as an expectation from them by admonishing.

My Uncle-in-law, then joint secretary, told me that he or anyone was not interested to travel abroad because they cannot shop as the President does not like it, and president never does it himself.

Zia always discouraged Madam Zia to buy expensive sarees, and said, president's wife does not need it. How many women are lucky enough to b ePresident's?

Many many more.

True. Unless one is an Indian or Indian Rajakar, you will not expect such comment from a Bangladeshi partriot.
Indian govt, a typical Indian, or Indian Dalals (which we've plenty recently)  never recognized or respected our Army and brave Mukti-Joddha's role and sacrifices who fought our liberation war. India only joined in & fought the last two weeks from December 3rd to December 15th. Yet, these Indians (and their local dalals) regards the Bangladesh liberation war was a India-Pak war where Mukti-bahini, Bangladesh army, common citizens, women's help & sacrifices are not worth much and are insignificant. Bangladeshi's long 9 month of fight and preparing the context for final outcome do not matter.

Out of that mindset, they (& dalals) celebrate and boast about Indian army & the fact that PAK surrendered to Indian Arora, where we the Bangladeshi find it repulsive, conniving, disrespecting and a back stabbing. Ideally PAK should have surrendered to our Muktijuddho chief Gen Osmani, if it ware not for the Indian typical hegemony mindset.  Our dalals do not even find it insulting.  (surrendering to Maj Zia does not even come in this context sice Zia was our chief at that time, regardless of how brave and decorated role he had in the war, totally two different issues that even a bone head can understand that. Surrendering happens chief to chief)

Pak army surrendered to General Aurora and not to our dear Major Zia given the great leadership BS that Mr. Nawaz talks about.

The man was himself was the chief instigator of the fire that he was forced to tackle to secure his own position. What a surprise!

Zia did not establish any democracy in Bangladesh. He only secured his position as Ayub Khan-s did in the past. Every dictator have done this to please the West for recognition and aid. Zia was not an exception.

Democracy? Oh God, I do not know when that would come to this poor country.

This song and dance about Zia is rather an insult to the intelligence of people.

Zia rescued the nation THREE times at the most critical time of Bangladesh:
    1) During independence war by providing critical leadership on the war field, inspiring the nation to fight on.
    2) As deputy of Mostak/Sayem and as chief marshal law administrator, his leadership stabilized the army and the country during the upheaval of coup after coup after the death of Mujib
   3) He re-established Democracy, Media freedom and introduce market economy when all these were illegal.

Everybody who is opining in Bangladesh news outlets (even calling Ziaur Rahman as ISI agents, Rajackers) or doing politics, or making tons of money in private businesses owe all of these to Ziaur Rahman.  Ziaur Rahman re-established Democracy, Freedom of speech in BD, post BAKSAL era and was the father of free market economy in Bangladesh.

People who cannot acknowledge the contributions of our national fathers such as Ziaur Rahman and out of their ugly narrow 'dol kana' sewer mind try to demonize and lie, do not in fact harm or affect the history or national fathers's reputation an ounce, but their own standing. All it does is to add more dumps into the sewer politics which only effects national political culture adversely.

One does not have to try to tear down and demonize one national hero in order to be able to appreciate the other. Only the vindictive hate mongers do those.

Let's see the facts, in chronological order, in order to debunk the serial lying and futile attempts to re-write history in Awami ways:

1)  Mujib was the undisputed independence political movement's  leader of Bangladesh and was arrested at the beginning of the war.

2)  Ziaur Rahman stepped up as the one of main leader of MuktiJuddho  (even AK Khondokar was inspired by Zia) when country was lost at the beginning of the fight, given Mujib was in jail & BD govt had not yet been formed. He have inspiration to fight and filled the vacuum of leadership.  he proclaimed declaration of independence, led the fight on the ground.   People who cannot admit this are simply miserable and narrow minded.

3) After independence, Mujib became power hungry monster and became a brutal dictator, created the killer RakkhiBahini (Tofael as the killing/looting leader), put RakkhiBahini above the judicial's jurisdiction by giving it the indemnity,  denied DEMOCRACY to the people and denied FREE SPEECH & Free Media by forming BAKSAL. Mujib became the worst enemy of the everything for which we had gained our independence for and for which he so valiantly had led the movement. What a reversal of role !!! Shocking! Bangladesh's first dictator and enemy of people's rights was Mujib.

4) JASOD's Inu, Badol, Mennon  had declared ARM WAR against the civilian Mujib govt, conspired and incited a section of army against Mujib govt. BTW, 'ARM WAR' against the state is sedition that is punishable by death. Yet our current illegal and un-elected PM Sheikh Hyena embraces her father's tormentors for current political benefit instead of hanging them for sedition. JASOD's arm war, conspiracies and incitement in Army added extra fuel to the anger the people were feeling due the BAKSAL's war against DEMOCRACY, FREEDOM, Free speeches and RakKhi Bahini Rampage of killing, looting and raping. Even Humayun Ahmed's family home was hijacked by RakkhiBahini according to his mother's memoir.

5) Mujib was killed by some Army officers, Awami Mostak (not Zia) became new president, and Awami Shafiullha(not Zia) was kept as the army chief. A lot of people suspect Awami Mostak was part of the killing plan as he so quickly became the president, instead of other bigger Awami leaders. The rest of the Awami leaders/MP had pledged allegiance to Mostak govt and did nothing to jail, try or punish Mujib killers. JASOD's Inu, Badol. Mennon, Motiya were ecstatic and were dancing in the street. The public mood seems joyous at the prospect of end of BAKAL/Rakkhi Bahini's rampage & dictatorship.

6) Subsequent coups after coups led by col Taher, Shafaet Jamil, Khaled Mossaraf occurred in the army. Zia was imprisoned. The nation was leaderless, no stable political process (BAKSAL had lost all credibility & trust by then) or govt existed for the 3 months since Mujib's death and the army was falling apart, country was falling part. The hard earned independence was in jeopardy. The state of emergency was declared by Mostak govt, justice Abu Sayem was made chief administrator of emergency, not Zia. More than a year after the killing of Mujib, in 1976 Zia had become chief administrator of marshal law when Sayem became the president. Only in April 1977 (1 and 1/2 year later of Mujib's killing) Zia became the president.
All these time he has helped the Mostak and Sayem administration to regain stability in the army & in the country. He made the army disciplined.

7) Zia surely was not elected as democratic vote, nor did Mostak or Sayem as the nation was still in BAKSAL non-democratic political state and the nation was going through very unstable phase. No democractic party existed then or democratic political system developed yet at that time to have an effective multi party democracy.  This is from the wiki.... " Ziaur Rahman became the 7th President of Bangladesh on 21 April 1977. Years of disorder from the previous political administration of the Awami League and BAKSAL had left most of Bangladesh's state institutions in disarray, with constant internal and external threats. Assuming full control of the state, Zia lifted martial law and introduced massive reforms for the development of the country." .

8) One does not have ANY moral authority to criticize Zia for not being democratic while he fails to criticize Mujib for killing the democracy in the first place by the constitution and practices of BAKSAL/Rakkhibahini.
    a) Zia gave BD stability, brought discipline in Army that was trigger happy and save from potential external threats/exploitation.
    b) Zia abolished much hated BAKSAL/RakkhiBahini and brought back DEMOCRACY for ALL.
    c) Zia re-established FREEDOM of media and freedom of speech
    d) Zia gave re-birth to AwamiLeague which was annulled to form BAKSAL
    e) Zia established FREE Market economy & nation building initiatives such as agriculture self-sufficiency, literacy movement etc.
    f) Zia gave national election in 1979.

9) Had Zia wanted to be a brutal dictator, he did not need to re-introduce multi-party democracy. He could have become the president of BAKSAL and rule like dictator. Had Mujib & BAKSAL survived, Bangladesh still be an undemocratic socialist country like Cuba, Venezuela, or Zimbabwe.

Funny to see the supporters of national election & local election robbing and theft, 154 vote-less MP, un-elected majority run parliament ,  and un-elected, undemocratic, ILLEGAL govt (by virtue of 154 un-elected parliament) who has been trying to replace democracy with development propaganda campaign and  who has been saying 'AL does not believe in too much democracy'  are now complaining why Zia was not democratically elected first.

Please stop idolizing a dictator with blood in his hands. The man should be prosecuted posthumously for the murders. Please, make no bones about it! Thank you very much.

If we want to Sketch his life, we have to divide his life into four parts.
1. Soldier Zia
2. Freedom fighter Zia
3. 7th of November and Zia
4. Father of multi-party democracy in Bangladesh.

Soldier Zia: Zia joined Pakistani military in fifty's and fought against Indian army in the Khemkaran sector in Punjab. His unit received the highest numbers of gallantry awards for heroic performances in the war. Ziaur Rahman himself won the distinguished and prestigious Hilal-e-Jurat medal (Crescent of Courage) is the second highest military award of Pakistan. As a professional soldier he delivered his wisdom and courage between India and Pakistan wars in 1965.
Freedom Fighter Zia: Zia with most of the Bengali army officers were worried for the intense situation in Bangladesh during early days of 1971. Zia was stationed in Chittagong with Col. M R Chowdhury and Brigadier Majumdar. Brigadier Majumdar was the most senior Bengali army officer in Chittagong. At the eve of operation search light the supreme Bengali leader Seikh M Rahman arrested by Pakistani army. This is unprecedented in the history, where supreme leader arrested by the enemy with out any blood shade.
When whole nation was in disarray and in panicky situation, Zia risked his and his family's life to safeguard the people and the country. Zia not only revolt against Pakistani military establishment he also declared the independent of Bangladesh.
His unit received the highest numbers of gallantry awards for heroic performances in the war. Ziaur Rahman himself won the distinguished and prestigious Bir Uttam medal is the second highest military award of Bangladesh. As a professional soldier he delivered his wisdom and courage between Bangladesh and Pakistan war in 1971. The declaration of our independent was vividly described by Hymeyan Ahmed in his book Jusna and Jononir golpo.
7th of November and Zia:
On 3rd of November, 1975 Brig. Khaled Mosharraf and Shafat Zamil took over power from Mustaq Ahmed and they arrested Zia and dismissed him from the army. Zia was a captive inside his home from 3rd of November to 7th of November, 1975. Khaled tried to consolidate power during this time, but he was not able to convince his fellow army officers and general soldiers.
On the morning of 7th of November 1975, general soldiers started mutiny against Khaled and Zamil. Ziaur Rahman was freed by the 2nd Artillery regiment under Lt. Col. Rashid and re-appointed him as army chief.
When Zia came out from the house arrest, he told his fellow soldiers to lay down their arms and follow the instructions of their respective officers. This time was one of the most crucial times in our entire history. If Gen Zia failed to back the army to the cantonment, Bangladesh would turn into a fail country.
Let see General Syed Asrafuzzaman comments about 7th of November.
"On November 07, 1975 ordinary soldiers, who mutinied against the newly appointed army chief Brig Gen Khaled Mosharraf, rather forced Gen Zia to become the army chief. There being no government in existence in those tumultuous days Gen Zia had no choice but to proclaim himself as the CMLA too. Later he had to become the president under circumstances beyond his control. At that time I was posted as a staff officer in the AHQ. I am an eye witness to many of the incidents that took place in those days in the army. Those who blame Gen Zia for usurping power are not correct. Let me also add here that at that critical time there was no other senior armed forces officer who was acceptable as a commander and leader to the unruly armed soldiers. Gen Zia was acceptable because of his clean and courageous image as a sector commander in the Liberation War, and for his personal honesty, integrity, efficiency and, above all, his charismatic leadership qualities. There was no one else who could beat him in this regard. I was personally present in the meeting in 2nd Field Regiment Artillery in Dhaka Cantonment wherein the armed soldiers (officers present were unarmed and without badges of rank) were insisting upon Gen Zia (the only officer with badges of rank on) to take the command of the army. Gen Zia was not willing to do so. Finally the senior officers present also requested Gen Zia to take over. Gen Zia in his usual way bullied the soldiers for being unruly. He also admonished the officers for failing to exercise command over their respective troops. Finally he came out with some preconditions both for the soldiers and the officers. His preconditions were accepted by all. Gen Zia became the army chief. The army started getting back into discipline. Finally chain of command was restored. If Gen Zia had refused to be the army chief on that day only God knew what would have been the fate of the army and the country".
Zia the father of multiparty democracy: Zia is embedded as the father of modern Bangladesh and as the one who 'constitutionalised' and established multi-party democracy in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Awami League, Jamata Islam, communist Party, NAP emerged as a political party under the blessing of Ziaur Rahman.
Zia not only save the country at this turmoil time of our history, he also entry in the political domain and state governance, and that the political dynamics are no longer confined to one party (as was during and immediately after the war of independence) or to a political ideology. He introduces Bangladeshi nationalism and multi-party democracy in Bangladesh.
Any country to flourish and progress, patriotic and visionary leaderships are indispensable. Such leaderships may come from founding fathers and from visionaries such as Zia who with correct guidance steered the future of the country on the right path.
Vision of Zia:
    • Face and tackle flood through digging rivers and cannels.
    • Confined the population growth through effective birth control policy.
    • Fight against illiteracy.
    • Consulates the press freedom.
    • Effective foreign policy to safe guard the sovereignty and economical diversity.
    • Promote free market economy to bolster economical growth.
    • Mandatory participation of SSC and HSC student to tackle illiteracy.
    • Send human expertise to wealthy country to earn foreign currency.

The stature Zia enjoys today in Bangladesh, even after almost thirty three years since his passing away, is unprecedented, given the short period during which he governed and his unplanned and circumstantial entry into politics and governance. Hence, Zia's name and the goodwill it carries will triumph in its own right as he has earned it and the people of Bangladesh have evidently reciprocated their respect for him. The fact remains that Zia and his legacy still lives on and will prevail.
Zia has been granted his rightful place in the history of this country by those who hold actual power – the people, the ultimate owners. And it is a place where no leaders have treaded before or since, where Zia is entrenched as a true patriot, an honest leader, a legendary visionary, and an effective governor.
