This story needs to be looked at with proper perspective. Someone must have given the English transcript of the speech of Sheikh Mujib before the interview. I believe, he did not make the number out of the thin air. I also believe, at that moment, he did not know the real story behind the liberation of Bangladesh. So, he must have depended on people around him for the facts and figures before the interview. If he used the figure 3 million (instead of 0.3 million), so be it.
Mr. Sirajur Rahman used this issue to serve his own interest, and was, in fact, serving the interest of the anti-liberation cohorts.

Sirajur Rahman might have resorted to tall talks at the fag end of his life, but his forceful disclosure that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman mistranslated 3 lack of war dead to 3 million had been testified by the person who gave him that figure in the first place. Abdur Razzaque was Mujib's most trusted lieutenant and from him Mujib got this figure (which was itself wildly exaggerated) before going to the foreign press briefing. So it seems Sirajur Rahman got this story right.

He used to be a bombast even in those days but certainly not the pathological liar he turned out to be late in life. His tall story and allegations of Sheikh Mujib's mistranslation of 3-lakh to '3 million' dead in 1971 War has been proven a complete lie by persons who were present on the occasion of Mujib's arrival in London from Pakistani jail, or David Frost's interview of Mujib.
