Re: [mukto-mona] The savages!

As I have said in another email message, a fundamentalist view is not the only version you can think of. There can be many belief levels. Why should I take Mowdoodi, Baghdadi, or Osama bin Laden as the true Muslims? For any religion you have to have a broad view. A believer must not get himself stuck in a particular place and time.

Simply by their self-claims do not make them true Muslims or true Hindus. Their claim is probably based on their birth to Muslim or Hindu parents. They can not be true Muslims or true Hindus at all. One who is guiding his life (as much he can) by the Koran, Hadiths, and Sharia are the true Muslims, period. There could be no less or no more. One must obey all the dictums of Koran and hadiths and emulate the Prophet of Islam as much he/she can. In this regard--those ISIS jihadists are the true muslims by the book. About Hindus also can be said exactly same thing. Example: If Koran said: "Kill the all the idolaters (Hindus) and other infidels (Christians and Jews because) because they are not muslims then all true muslims should obey the Allah's orders. ISIS are doing the exact things that Koran and hadiths asked the to do.  All koranic muslims should hate and killed all non-muslims. Now you tell us who is true muslims and who are only muslims by his birth in the muslim parents?

Thanks for your response, but I do not think you have answered my question.

My perception about Islam has been shaped by the writings of authors like Ibrahim Khan, Yakub Ali Chowdhury, Nazrul Islam, Dr. Shahidullah, Gholam Mistafa, Barkatullah, Mir Mosharraf Hossain, and so on

Did these authors write the Quran, the Sharia, Hadis and Sunna?

Islam is not what these people write or practice. Islam is what is written in the Quran, the Sunna and Sharia. Islam is what Muhammad  preached, practiced and enforced. It is compulsory for every Muslim to emulate the greatest of all prophets, Muhammad.

Anyway, it does not really matter what you make of any other religion. But when it is Islam--it is a different matter.

I can guess you have read the entire Koran word for word and between lines. I am nowhere near you in this respect. My perception about Islam has been shaped by the writings of authors like Ibrahim Khan, Yakub Ali Chowdhury, Nazrul Islam, Dr. Shahidullah, Gholam Mistafa, Barkatullah, Mir Mosharraf Hossain, and so on. Many bards like Lalon and Sufi poets also have important role in shaping my perception. During my school years I had to read a memoir by Dr. Suniti Chatterjee in which there is a dialog between the author and a very ordinary Muslim co-passenger of the ship. I have grown up with Muslims along with my fellow Hindus. I still have many Muslim friends. Many of them are very religious. Are they not true Muslims? They will claim they are.

My wife is proud of being a Hindu although he does not follow many things that an orthodox Hindu follows. Is she not a true Hindu? By Manu's standard she is not. If a fundamentalist view of a religion is the true religion, then should we trash the other views and thereby brand them as false Hindus? Why would they tolerate it? We have to see how she interprets her religious teachings and how much she accepts and how much she remains silent about.

The problem with religion is that it is embedded in our psyche so deeply that it would be almost an impossible proposition to separate it from our lives. The lifelong confirmed atheist Dr. Ahmed Sharif understood this reality quite well. That's why attempts to bury religions by the communists or the proponents of Lokayata (Carvak) philosophy turned out to be boomerang. The best way would be to enlighten people through modern education, not by demeaning his religion but allowing them complete freedom in practicing his own religion in a more and more universally appealing way.

Looks like only Mr. Abul Kasem and Abu-Bakr-Al-Baghdadi have fully understood the Islam preached by Muhammed.

He practices Islam as preached and practiced by Muhammad.
