I will not give the role of a whistle blower to a philosopher, metaphysician, theologian, or a poet when it comes to defying a scientific theory. The role has to be played by scientists and they have to use scientific theories proper. If soul or afterlife are physical realities, they have to be explained by scientific theories. If they disprove them using the use of hypothesis testing, we have to accept them. We may have to wait for revolutionary ideas---that should be perfect. 
Having said the above, I must admit that metaphysical or poetic or mythological truths are also acceptable although they are definitely not competitors of scientific truth. They are simply means for looking at our lives and their relations to the vast universe from different levels.
