Russians are basically fuming with anger with their nose being punched by a NATO member. If Russians do not respond in kind, it would be asking for more humiliations from their smaller Baltic NATO neighbors.
As I see, Putin would not budge until he gets a full formal apology. Erdogan has two choices, And, both would be bad choices. He stands up to the Russians, he will be boxed by Russian S-400/500. Turkman fighters would be totally isolated and bombed to the stone age while Kurds would be marching towards the Turkish border. US will not abandon Kurds because only Kurds could take on ISIS and defeat. Alternatively, he apologizes to Russians and digs his own grave at home.

Turks fought twelve wars against the Russ, and didn't win any of them in spite of active support from world powers. Stupid Erdogan won't win either. WWIII is a far cry. World Wars didn't happen for trivial reasons. Neither the consequences were trivial.
