[ALOCHONA] Rice crisis

Other than getting on to the current administration, I would think, we are not looking at the broader picture of the issue of Rice crisis.

On the supply side current food administration, unlike their predecessors , as a criminal offense against our food security, failed to look into the matter on time to take a precautionary measures- building the buffer food stock. Not only that, input supply, during the last plantation season, was never in such a precarious conditions. That is one, perhaps the most dominant factor on the issue.

Sourcing the supply from one erratic, unreliable and politically motivated source enhanced the crisis, that is another.

On the production side, what is being put under shadow is the depleting resources for production. And to my understanding, greatest of all, the matter has been deliberately kept aside by those who has taken the crowns of our 'heart and soul'.

 

Tista barrage (conceived in 30s) G-K project (conceived in 60s), all made to suffer. Prospect of irrigating almost 1 million hector of land from the surface water has been curtailed to 30 to 40 percent of the capacity. No one talks about the water shortage mainly because that has string that they can not touch.

 

In spite of severe lacking in population control, growing population made to face with growing uncertainties on staple's supply. Farakkah's impact on irrigation, salinity, land erosion, bio diversity and eco system, nothing caches those eyes, otherwise so sharp. Millions of farmers languishing in an inhuman state, but that do not touches their hearts, otherwise so conscious, yet bedevils all others. Their preoccupation belittles all these vital issues that directly relates to our survival and development prospects. I bet, they will never talk on another barrage, low cost irrigation systems or development of a structured agriculture marketing system that can safeguard the farmers, distributors and the consumers.

All we hear how to malign someone, but not certainly to overcome the issue. 37 years on nation is still begging for very basics, while those 'nation keeper' busy singing their own songs, nation makes nothing tangible from this devil's advocates. Their advocacy only deviates the focus from the basic issues. Back breaking hunger and deprivation do not touch them as a reward for preoccupying.

No wonder over the time many of us also learnt to live with their kind of thinking.
