AL, BNP rally at UN HQ in New York

Several hundred members of the ruling Awami League and opposition BNP staged counter demonstrations in front of the United Nations Headquarters Saturday in a show of their usual domestic political hostilities abroad.
   The Awami League and its associate organisations’ activists welcomed prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s speech at the UN General Assembly and her government’s vision for a changed and digital Bangladesh.
   The AL showdown was led by the US unit president, Professor Khaled Hasan, and the vice-president, Engineer Farasat Ali, and the acting general secretary, Sazzadur Rahman.
   On the other side, the BNP’s demonstration was led by the US unit president, Abdul Latif Samrat, the acting general secretary, Mostafa Kamal Pasha Babu, and vice-president Gias Ahmed, JASAS general secretary Golam Faruk Saheen and another faction of the BNP led by its vice-president Solaiman Bhuiyan and general secretary Zillur Rahman Zillu.
   The demonstrators of the two rival parties held peaceful demonstrations side by side in front of the UN Headquarters at 46-state of the First Avenue.
   They staged demonstrations for two hours from 9:30am (US time).
   The BNP activists raised slogans against the government’s role regarding the construction of Tipaimukh dam on the common River Barak, ‘transit to India’ and government’s ‘agreements against national interests’.
