Mysterious murders on rise

The recovery of the body of one unidentified person in Khilgaon area yesterday brought the number of secret murder victims to seven in the city over the last nine days, a clear indication of increasing trend of such killings.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Khilgaon Police Station Nazimuddin said police recovered the body of a youth aged around 30 from an under-construction house in Nasirabad area at 9:00am. Police suspect that miscreants strangled the man by using cloth or rope and dumped the body there. There were bruises around the victim's throat.

On Tuesday the body of Mizanur Rahman, Assistant Sub-inspector of Ramna Police Station, was recovered from Mirzapur in Tangail. Two more bodies recovered on the same day -- one from inside a drum at a bus counter of Shyamoli and the other from Uttar Shahjahanpur -- are still lying at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College as none has claimed them.

Sekandar, morgue assistant of Dhaka Medical College, told this correspondent that at least 10 people had come to the morgue in the last two days to find their missing relatives. Motijheel Police Station OC Tofazzal Hossain said police was investigating into the murder at Uttar Shahjahanpur. But the victim's identity couldn't be known till yesterday afternoon.

On April 27, dead bodies of three people were recovered from Dhaka Udyan in Mohammadpur area. They were kept hidden under sand. The three victims are Mizanur Rahman, Shakuria union Jubo Dal president in Jhalokathi and his two accomplices Forkan Ahmed and Murad.

The relatives of the deceased claimed they were hiding in Dhaka to evade arrest as several cases had been filed against them.Inspector General of Police Nur Mohammad yesterday at a press briefing at the police headquarters said every secret killing is being investigated.

High police officials expressed their concern over the rise of secret killings.
