Speed up project for India connectivity: PMO

Prime Minister's Office (PMO) yesterday asked ministries and departments concerned to quickly implement road, water and railway sector development projects for enhancement of connectivity with neighbouring India, official sources said.

A meeting at the PMO regarding sub-regional cooperation also asked the ministries and departments to inform both the PMO and Economic Relations Division (ERD) after submitting project proposals to the Planning Commission, sources added.

Principal Secretary to the PMO Abdul Karim presided over the meeting that discussed implementation of joint communiqué that was declared during the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to India after assuming power this time.

The meeting discussed utilisation of Chittagong and Mongla Port, rail, road and waterways connectivity by India, Nepal and Bhutan. Signing of a MoU between BSTI and Indian BSI was also discussed in the meeting.

Chittagong and Mongla Port was totally prepared to be used by India and Nepal, officials informed the meeting. They said Ashuganj port will start to be used as transhipment centre for India by next month.

The meeting emphasised the need for establishment of a permanent customs office at Mongla and dredging of waterways to bring back navigability, sources said.

The existing tariff, non tariff, and para-tariff barriers in the Indian market were also discussed in the meeting. They also discussed effective utilisation of India's 1 billion dollar loan facilities.

The meeting as informed that border market will be established in two places. One at Sonarhat area under Goainghat upazila of Sylhet district and another at Baliabri area under Bajitpur upazila of Kishoregonj district. The proposed border market in Lauarghar area under Taherpur upazila of Sunamgonj district would not be seated due to a dispute on border. The markets will regularly sit in every Saturday, sources said.

In the markets people won't be able to buy goods worth over US$50 but will be able to sell as much as they want. Only 12 agro products but no imported items will be allowed to sell in these markets. A management committee comprising local administration, border guards, customs department officials and elected representatives will supervise the markets.
