India, Nepal to be allowed use of ports

Manikganj, July 17 (bdnews24.com)—As a way of "strengthening bilateral relations," the government has decided that India and Nepal will be able to use the Chittagong and Mongla ports, Shahjahan Khan, the shipping minister said on Saturday while visiting Paturia Ghat in Mankganj. In relation to transport issues relating to the local area, he said some utility ferries would be added to the Paturia Ghat to make ferry movement uninterrupted - cutting down expenditure and saving time.

Two more utility ferries have been built, he added. He also said that steps had also taken to excavate the river to maintain navigability.

bdnews24.com Rajbari correspondent reports that the minister, whilst inaugurating the biennial meeting of the District Motor Workers' Union at the Shilpakala Academy at Goalondo upazila, urged the transport workers to improve the service standard through owner-worker cooperation. He also said a four-lane bypass road will soon be constructed at Daulatdia Ghat at a cost of Tk 142 million to avoid traffic jams and ease sufferings of passengers.
