Obama signs legislation approving Congressional gold medal for Bangladesh's Muhammad Yunus
WASHINGTON, Oct 6 (UNB) - US President Barack Obama signed a legislation Tuesday to award Congress' gold medal to Muhammad Yunus, the Bangladeshi economist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate who is credited with developing the microcredit concept that has improved the lives of poor people around the world.
The legislation said Yunus merits the medal because his system of lending can help bring about "a historical breakthrough in the fight against poverty."
The Congressional Gold Medal dates from before the United States; the Continental Congress awarded the first one to George Washington, the first U.S. president, three months before the members proclaimed independence from Britain. The presentation ceremony for Yunus has not been scheduled, according to Canadian Press report.
