[ALOCHONA] Supreme Court Bar Association polls

Supreme Court Bar Association polls

Dhaka, Apr 1 (bdnews24.com) — BNP loyalists swept the Supreme Court Bar Association polls as results were announced early Friday after two days of voting that saw a very high turnout.

Khandker Mahbub Hossain, an adviser to the BNP chairperson, was re-elected president while Mohammad Badruddoza Badal became the new general secretary of the influential lobby group of Bangladesh's top lawyers. Fahima Nasrin, a former deputy attorney general during the BNP-Jamaat alliance government, won for treasurer.

In all, the BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikyo Parishad bagged 11 of 14 seats at stake.

One of the two vice presidents went to the Awami League-backed Sammilita Ainjibi Samannoy Parishad. The ruling party supporters also won a post of assistant secretary and a member.

The pro-government panel was led by Abdul Baset Majumder and S M Abul Hossain, for president and general secretary respectively.

A third panel, Independent Lawyers' Forum, nominated Mohammad Shahjahan for general secretary post. The panel's president candidate, maverick politician Nazmul Huda, decided not to run at the last minute, reportedly after "understanding" with the leadership of the BNP, the party that had ousted him for poor disciplinary records.
A third individual, Zakir Hossain, however, ran for president independently.

Bar official Nimesh Chandra Sen said 36 lawyers vied for the 14 seats on the executive committee. Of the 2,318 voters, the number of valid votes cast stood at 2085. "At almost 90 percent, this is a very high turn-out," said one lawyer. The 10am-5pm polling ran for two consecutive days on Wednesday and Thursday.

In the last elections, the BNP-backed panel won seven posts, including those of president and general secretary, while the Awami League-backed panel won the rest, including the treasurer and vice president posts.
