Cheap laptops? Just forget it…



Dhaka, Apr 20 (bdnews24.com) — The prices of Telephone Shilpa Sangstha (TSS)-assembled laptops appear to have overshot the projected ones even before their long-awaited production commenced.

Hasanul Haque Inu, parliamentary committee head on the telecom ministry, announced on Wednesday that the three models of laptops would be priced at Tk 12,000, Tk 18,000 and Tk 27,000. They would reach the market in July, he said.

Telecom minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju, however, had told parliament on Oct 28, 2010 that the laptops would be priced at Tk 10,000. During the House session, he had also assured that the laptops would reach the market in six months. Raju on June 2009 had said that they could very well take initiatives to provide students with laptops at Tk 10,000 apiece.
