The issue of transit-corridor to India is linked to our security, territorial sovereignty, economy, political sovereignty and so on. It is linked to our independence and sovereignty, and so it is not just the question of fees only.

India must settle the outstanding bilateral problems first, before we can allow transit-corridor to them. But the present govt has allowed it by betraying our national interest and creating immense
security risks for us. The patriots must oppose the govt on the issue. Any appeasement on the issue is tantamount to appeasement to Indian hegemonism.

Free-transit to India- Local business to be hit

The opening of transit facility has thus brought new threats to Bangladeshi business and particularly its exports to India's northeast., the business sources said.Local manufacturers and exporters have raised concerns over the cost free Indian transit of goods through Bangladesh to its northeast saying it has poised to undermine their business competitiveness and exports.India must remove all non-tariff barriers now 15 in place to give Bangladesh a level playing field. They are claiming to have given duty free access to 46 garment items, local business sources said asking how much relief it has brought to Dhaka's exports.

Business leaders said as far as the duty free access is concerned, India has just removed 10 percent import duty while retaining 22 percent more duty including tax and VAT on those RMG products. In contrast to it, India is now using duty free, tariff free and all tax free transit facility which also include subsidized transportation services such as fuel and exemption to environmental damage.

The opening of transit facility has thus brought new threats to Bangladeshi business and particularly its exports to India's northeast., the business sources said. They said Bangladeshi exporters have long enjoyed a price advantage over the Indian rivals in the Indian seven states in the northeast due to their close proximity to the area across the border.

It was easy to them to compete with major Indian firms based at least a thousand miles away in Western India. But with the opening of the transit from last month Indian companies are now supplying the northeast markets through Ashuganj transshipment facility to reach their exports almost cost free.
