Dispute over control of Narsingdi Chhatra League, competition over
getting the position of district Awami League president and Lokman
Hossain's voice against the drug trade and crime are some of the
reasons for his murder, Awami League insiders and locals have claimed.

The Daily Star yesterday talked to over 100 people, including leaders
of the Chhatra League, close aides of Lokman, locals, and journalists,
about the killing of the Narsingdi municipality mayor on Tuesday
night.

The Officer-in-Charge of Narsingdi Police Station, Anwar Hossain, said
Lokman had been vocal against drug trade and criminal activities. Many
criminals had a grudge against him on this account.

He said it was a well planned assassination. "We have already started
investigations by taking all these into account."

Talking to The Daily Star, almost everyone said Narsingdi district
Chhatra League was clearly divided into two.

Lokman backed the Shah Alam Bhuiyan-led faction of the Chhatra League.
Shah Alam is the president of Narsingdi district Chhatra League.
Lokman's younger brother Shamim Newaz, general secretary of the
district Chhatra League and Vice-President of Narsingdi Govt College
unit of Chhatra League, also backed this faction.

However, Posts and Telecommunications Minister Razi Uddin Ahmed Raju,
elected from Narsingdi-5 constituency, backed Rehanul Islam Lelin,
joint general secretary of the district Chhatra League. The minister's
brother Salahuddin Ahmed Bacchu also backs Sajjad Hossin, acting
general secretary of Narsingdi Govt College unit of Chhatra League,
locals told The Daily Star.

On October 22, the Shah Alam Bhuiyan-led Chhatra League faction
declared Minister Razi Uddin Ahmed persona non grata in Narsingdi over
"the minister's misdeeds and unsocial activities".

On that day, supporters of Shah Alam and Shamim Newaz brought out a
procession with brooms against the minister and demanded his
resignation, witnesses told The Daily Star.

Shah Alam and Shamim Newaz also expelled Lelin and Sajjad from their
respective posts in the Chhatra League for their "activities against
the party".

Locals told The Daily Star that the row between the minister and
Lokman also intensified over who would be getting the president's post
of Narsingdi district Awami League.

Lokman and the minister's brother Salahuddin had both been lobbying
for the position, they said.

Yesterday a large number of people who The Daily Star talked to said
Lokman was very popular because of his pro-people activities.

"A kind-hearted mayor like Lokman is rare in our country. We might get
another person as mayor but we will not get a mayor like him," Razia
Sultana, councillor of Narsingdi municipality, said.

"He [Lokman] declared a war on drugs and criminal activities in this
area. This went against a vested quarter and might have cost him his
life," Yesmin Sultana, another councillor, said.

"He simply changed the face of Narsingdi, made it clean, built parks,
constructed and repaired many roads, bus stands, launch terminals,
Eidgah Maidan and so many other things for the people," said Jewel, a
businessman.
