Persona probe not done in a month

The police investigation committee into the Persona affair has sought a fourth extension to its deadline.Gulshan zone deputy commissioner Lutfur Kabir told bdnews24.com on Wednesday that the team had asked for another 10 days to look into the illicit use of CCTV cameras at the popular beauty parlour chain.

The team, which was formed on Oct 3, is led by Gulshan zone additional deputy commissioner Nizamul Hauqe Molla. The other two members are assistant commissioners Mizanur Rahman and Nurul Alam. They were initially given three days to submit a report. The panel had the deadline stretched by five days each in two phases on Oct 5 and 13, before getting another extension, this time by 10 days, on Oct 20.

When asked why the probe was not complete even after a month, Lutful Kabir said, "One of the members had to go to a special training during the investigation. When he returned he was assigned to the Narayanganj elections."Right now another member is in Saudi Arabia for hajj," he added.

A doctor who went to the parlour's Banani Road 11 branch on Sep 30 for a spa found a CCTV in her dressing room after she used it.The woman made a verbal complaint with police and the media for filming her.The following day Persona owner Kaniz Almas told bdnews24.com that the cameras were there for security reasons and she did not think they were violating anyone's privacy. The revelation caused much uproar in the media, social networking sites and blogs about the use of CCTV cameras at beauty parlours.

The High Court ordered the government on Oct 10 to take out all such cameras following a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Human Rights Foundation.
