Jamaat men clash with cops, torch police van in city

Staff Correspondent

Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student front Islami Chhatra Shibir clashed with police at Paltan in the capital on Thursday afternoon.

As police intercepted the procession, the Jamaat activists threw brickbats at the law enforcers and torched a police van.

Police lobbed tear gas and charged baton to disperse the protesters.

At least three policemen including Mothijheel traffic inspector Abul Bashar were injured in the clash.

The traffic inspector was admitted to Bangladesh Police Central Hospital at Rajarbagh.

It couldnot be known if any protesters had been injured, but Jamaal sources claimed that police had attacked their ‘peaceful procession.’

Police said that the unruly demonstrators also damaged one of their official SUVs.

The Jamaat activists marching towards Dainik Bangla intersection also damaged several passengers-loaded buses, the witnesses said.

After the incident, police picked up three of the protesters in Motijheel for attacking police and vandalising vehicles, the police confirmed.

The Jamaat-e-Islami in press release claimed that four of their activists were arrested while they were holding peaceful protest rally in the capital.

Ghulam Azam was sent to jail on Wednesday on charges of committing crimes against humanity and peace, genocide and war crimes during Bangladesh’s Liberation War 40 years ago.

The International Crimes Tribunal, rejecting his petition for bail, ordered sending Azam, who stands accused on 62 specific charges, to Dhaka Central Jail.

Although Ghulam Azam stepped down from the highest post [ameer] of his party over a decade ago, his followers still consider him as the supreme spiritual leader.
