DHAKA: Opposition chief whip Zainul Abdin Farroque on Friday attacked the prime minister for her remark that it is impossible for the government to guard anyone's bedroom. He reminded Hasina that she was under oath to protect the people and simply cannot make such comment over the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi. "Even after 13 days of the murder, the killers have not been arrested. The prime minister is saying that it is not the government's duty to guard anyone's bedroom. The evidence has been damaged. Now such comments suggest that the government is trying to bury the Sagar-Runi murder." "They have taken the investigations to the mortuary by spreading confusions," the BNP leader added. Sagar Sarowar, a news editor with private television channel Maasranga Television , and his wife Meherun Runi, a senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were killed in the early hours on Feb 11 at their rented flat in the city's West Rajabazar. Various journalist organisations, including some backed by the ruling Awami League, rallied across the country on Wednesday criticising the government's failure in arresting the killers of the journalist couple even after 10 days of the incident. The journalists also announced a one-hour pen down for Monday and hunger strike on Mar 1 to press home their demand for immediate arrest and trial of the killers. Hasina rebuked journalists on Thursday for their demonstrations. "The prime minister of Bangladesh cannot make such comments. She took oath under the constitution to protect the 160 million people and the country's borders," Farroque said at a human-chain programme demanding that Feb 25 be declared a national mourning day for the killings that took place at the BDR headquarters in 2009. "Those who have publicly refused to protect the people have no right to stay in power. I will urge the government to immediately step down by holding elections under a non-partisan government," he continued at the Labour Party programme in front of the National Press Club. Referring to the Mar 12 'grand rally' at Dhaka, the BNP publicity secretary continued, "I urge the government, 'Give permission to hold the programme at Manik Mia [Avenue], Paltan Grounds or Naya Paltan'. Or else, we will declare protests from wherever we are barred."
