Re: [mukto-mona] Awami League's moral defeat

I am also worried, worse days could be ahead for Bangladesh.

I have been reluctant to criticize Awami League. Because, I think Awami League is the best political option that is available in Bangladesh right now. But I am fearful; their misdeeds and mistakes could put the country in another round of serious descent.

While Mahfuz Anam's editorial was in the spirit of helping Awami League to come to better senses, look at the doctored version of it in Mukto-Mona and other forums (Awami League's moral defeat: Govt holds Dhaka city hostage). Naturally, the opposition wants to exploit the faults of Awami League.

Setting aside the comparison between bad and worse, the country needs to get out of the jungle culture. Civilized behavior from Awami League can do a lot of good for Bangladesh. I am certainly disappointed with them, and my sincere advice to them would be like what Mahfuz Anam has offered.

Is AL really unsure about itself as has been asserted by Mahfuz Anam? To me it looks AL is oversure about itself. It happens when the party perception is that whatever it is doing is perfect and whatever the opposition is doing is bad. This perception makes the ruling party think that it will have absolute support from the majority for whatever action it will take against opposition. This also indicates that the ruling party is gradually getting isolated from the general masses although it hardly realizes it. The situation gets worse for the party because of the blind and motivated support it gets from a handful of opportunists. I think AL is currently suffering from group think syndrome. A very small group is deciding on the major issues and the rest are keeping their mouths shut in fear that they may lose their jobs, positions, or opportunities.
Looks like bad days are ahead. Time for Mohiuddin Anwars to rejoice is knocking on the door.

Politics is not exactly a place of moral standard.
