RE: [mukto-mona] Fw: [KHABOR] RE: ৭ মার্চের ভাষণ জিয়ার কাছে ছিল ‘গ্রিন সিগন্যাল’

Dear readers,

After reading this post, I felt some responsibility to write on this matter.

Mijib and Zia are the two figures whose ligacy has politically divided Bangladesh for many years. It is irony that these two figures are placed by some people as the contradictory images. In fact this is untrue. They both have their true place in the history of Bengali nation. For the narrow political benefit we should be blinded. Irrespective of any political affiliation the people of Bangladesh in fact respects both these men's contribution for the nation.

In March, as a prime minister-elect Mujib warned his people to be prepared for the struggle for independence if that would be imposed on Bengalis. He asked the nation to go for noncoperation strike and keep on watch. At the same breath he demanded to the then Pakistan Government to hand over the power to the elected representatives (Awami League) and put forward 4 conditions before joining the Pakistan assembly. He then on the most of the days of March took his party leaders to sit in discussions with the president Yahia Khan and the second largest party leader Bhutto with the view to resolve the issue. Unfortunately the meetings ended without fruit on 25 March 1971.

The people and the Bengali nation, as a whole came under attack by its own government army. He then reportedly instructed the leaders of the party to leave the country and he personaly decided  to be arrested. Yahia and Bhutto left Dhaka after unleasing their dogs to attack civilians. Mujib let him arrested and taken to Pakistan. The Awami league leaders and all other political leaders ran away to India. The Bengal regiment, the police, the BDR and all other armed paramilitaries came under direct attack by their own non Bengali colleques. Reports showed that the attack and genocide were preplanned by Pakistan government with the collaboration of so called civilian leader Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.

Every one who were not the children at that time could remebmer that the whole nation was in a desperate, fearful and confused situation without any leadership from any one. Isolated battles were on thorughout the country. The common people took up arms and stood side by side with our deserted and regrouped army, police and BDR to protect lives. At that crucial moment being even a junior military officer Major Zia along with his troops fought through the attacks of Pakistani attackers and had the guts and political vision to take over the radio station and declared the independence of Bangladesh. This declaration was so important for the nation that it become the clear direction for a nation to get in to the action towards the independence thorugh a liberation war with the participation of common people of all walks of life. This was in English because it has to be in English. The world also had to be informed that a nation has decided to engage in a decisive war for its legitimate liberation. To repel the Army attack to a unarmed, unprepared population an Army leader was very much needed at that moment of the history for our armed struggle for the liberation, which Major Zia provided very approriately.

The formation of the Bangladesh government and an official declaration of independence on 17 April 1971 was a formal official procedure to become one of the member of the countries of the world. A government formation was important to support our freedom fighters on the front and organise a nationhood after liberation. It was complex that the Awami League was elected and hence it was legitimate to form the government of Pakistan but was not mandated to form a government of an independent country, Bangladesh. So the party has to go through a lot of national and international lobbying before to declare a government as such.

Therefore, it is clear that PM-Elect of Pakistan Mr.Mujib was not in a position to legitimately declare the indepence of Bangladesh in the eye of international community and also was not in a position to mobilise an armed rersistance against the Pakistan Army.

The digging out of the history of the "birth places "of the persons has nothing to do with their contribution to the nation when it was badly needed at the moment of life and death situation of the history. It would be ungrateful if we fail to acknowledge the contribution of the people simply restrained by the mere personal benefit or whim. Notable that many PMs and minsiters of many nations have born in other countries such as of Australia.

People's diverse view is appreciable but by discrediting others does not bring credit for anyone. Rather its contrary. Thank you.

Historical processes are not as black and white as some novices want to portray.
How come Zia's announcement didn't contain any call to people of Bangladesh
to join the resistance against the Military occupation?
Read the following rtnn blog in this context:

[ See:   http://www.rtnn.net/details.php?id=22288&p=1&s=1    পাঠকের মন্তব্য by Ahmed K. Rashid]

No event in this world happens in isolation from the surrounding process.
There was a close connection between leader and the masses .....
On March 7, 1971, Sheikh Mujib addressed the public meeting in Dhaka with the
declaration  "this time it is our struggle for liberation and our struggle for
independence. ...."

Pakistani flags on all official, semiofficial and private buildings in Bangladesh
had been replaced by Bangladesh flags.  Sheikh Mujib's house (Road # 32) also
hoisted the same flag on 7th March 1971........

Is not hoisting Bangladesh flag is an open symbol of declaration of Independence
of Bangladesh from Pakistani occupation???????

The formal declaration of Independence by the government in exile on Muzib Nagar Day was the most condign & appropriate announcement of the independence of  "People's Republic of Bangladesh"

Formed in early April 1971, the exile  government formally announced the declaration of independence
of  Bangladesh. On 10th April 1971 in Mujibnagar, elected parliament members of 1970's election formed
Bangladesh Government. The cabinet took oath on 17th April at liberated area in mango grove of
Baidyanathtala (Bhoborpara) Meherpur, Kustia [Present Name is Mujibnagar] . This government took all
policy decisions with respect to liberation war.

There should be no denying of the fact that the liberation of Bangladesh is the outcome
of long historical process (1947-1971) under the leadership Bangobondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman....

" ebarer songram muktir songram, ebarer songram shadhinatar songram" ? What else do we need? How explicit can one be about freedom? This was a treason offense for any Pakistani citizen by any criteria!

1. No that was not taken as a treason offense. If it was taken as a treason offense then whole Pakistani Junta including civil. military as well as political establishment would not sit down   and talk for 11 days  (14th march to 25th March) for a political solution. So, Mr. Sen, Pal or Chakroborty, whoever he may be is, defenitely analysing wrongfully.  2. If Mujib meant 'that' means declaration of independence, he would not join talks as a leader of the majority party. Also Tajuddin Ahmed Khan, Mujib's second lieutenant would understand that and had not begged to Mujib on 25th March (night) with a Tape Recorder to announce Independence of Bangladesh', to be recorded.  Not only that Mujib replied as , "I can't do that Tajuddin, I shall be termed  'Traitor' by the whole world, not only Pakistan.  3. If that was the declaration, then a phony declaration would not have to be put forward by 'AWAMI COTERIE' later.  4. Mujib would had been the right person to declare but he did not, that is the fact.  5. A declaration by Major Zia still impacted as a last rersort for the nation,  mainly the uniformed Bangladeshi people in East Pakistan to defect and join for the liberation war right on time to make initial defense to Pakistani offensive. If those initial defense was not there I don't know what would have  happened  to the history  of Bangladesh now. In their calculation (the Junta) did not take into account that a large sacle (90%) defection will take place (also they did not knew a unknown but couragious Zia would appear in the arena).  History has never been taken shape with lies. Therefore, wheather Zia wanted to be the declarer or not, we need to put him in the perapective he deserved.
এই গাঁথা, কোনো ব্যক্তি বিশেষের, দল বা গোষ্ঠির অবশ্যই নয় একক, সকলের কাব্যকথা;

It would be highly blasphemous (pun) to compare them because they came from two separate backgrounds. One was a political leader, who led us to fight for our independence and the other one was a military man, who seized the moment to announce the declaration of Independence. Did we know Zia before 1971? No, majority Bangalees did not! Could Zia have made the declaration without Mujib's hard political work and long struggle ? Of course not! Did not Mujib say " ebarer songram muktir songram, ebarer songram shadhinatar songram" ? What else do we need? How explicit can one be about freedom? This was a treason offense for any Pakistani citizen by any criteria!   Now, people can say whatever they want but that would not change the history. History has already been written. It can only be analyzed and not rewritten! The sooner it gets to our heads, the better for our country! Last and not the least is that General Zia was a great soldier and his declaration was an important event of 1971 and people should give the credit him regardless his politics or origin. I must say Awami League people made some big blunders right after the independence and their attitude towards the country had opened the door for generals to come into the scene and seize the state power. It was bloody but it was simple way to take out the leadership. The question is: Has anybody learned anything from these tragedies? Can history repeat itself again? I hope not but then, who knows what considering the civil war like situation in many parts of Bangladesh and beyond? -Shah. D
