Yes, religion also plays a part in the repression of minority in Bangladesh. Thousands of evidences are there, not just one or two, where religious-bigots entered into the temple at dead-of-night and desecrated deities and vandalized temple properties. Sometimes - it has been done in the broad day light in front of devotees during ongoing celebrations. In many of those instances, mobs attacked devotees and injured them. Most of these attacks occurred just after completion of noon prayer in the mosque. Therefore, these actions were taken as a part of some sort of religious rites, must have been instigated by the mosque authorities. These atrocities are not done to grab the temple properties. These are clear-cut religious hate crimes, and should be treated as such. We cannot deny or white-wash the actual cause, if we are interested in resolution of minority problems in Bangladesh. generally do not like to ask direct questions in the second person in the public forum. But let me make an exception here. Were you asleep over the last 3-4 decades, Mr. Q. A. Rahman?
>>>>>>> Member Bain,
Maybe you read TOO much into a simple question. I ONLY asked the question.
I am aware of many problems in Bangladesh and it is not limited to minorities only. Powerless, poor Muslims also face oppression by powerful and corrupted people.
We talk about politics, religion and secularism a LOT in this forum. Most member work under an assumption that, the religion of Islam is the main problem for all crimes committed against minorities in BD. As far as I know there are NO strong evidence to support any theory that, more secular leaning parties done anything significant to help addressing concerns of minorities. I even know where some Hindu leaders involved for grabbing temple properties (Debottor Shompotti or land belongs to temple).
The question was asked to prove a point. I think all unbiased and educated members of this forum are aware of problems in our country. However blaming religion behind is INACCURATE and misdirected. Even thousand years ago people were driven by greed, jealousy and other vices.
Human beings are complex animal and putting simple label on them does NOT do justice.
If you sound like you do not know about the barbaric atrocities against non-Muslims in Bangladesh, what could be expected from the average hateful Muslim fanatic of Bangladesh?
>>>>>>>>> As a human being and a fellow Bangladeshi I care about all people who suffer in our country (Even outside the country). I did ask a question. That does NOT mean I deny the issue or support oppressing anyone. Maybe you read my question but assumed more than what was written. Please re-read my question again and hope it will be clear to you.
Shalom!

But let me make an exception here. Were you asleep over the last 3-4 decades, Mr. Q. A. Rahman? The governments in Bangladesh have not only failed to protect minorities; on many occasions, they have committed and supported criminal acts against non-Muslims in Bangladesh. Barbaric atrocities against non-Muslims have been going on with impunity in Bangladesh practically over the entire lifetime of the country so far. For the average soft-sellers of hatred against non-Muslims, Amnesty International reports on Bangladesh should be an acceptable source on how the country has been doing in terms protecting the religious minorities, including the Hindus, the Buddhists, the Ahmedias and the Christians. Please browse through the pages. Here are only a few examples. In 1992, the democratically elected parliament of Bangladesh, via majority vote in a resolution, praised the countrymen for not being too hateful against religious minorities of the country, while the facts were that thousands of temples had been destroyed or damaged, and hundreds of thousands of minorities had become homeless due to arson and looting, among other atrocities. Again these are only a few examples. While I read many more and heard about many more from phone conversations with relatives and friends, I am not a repository of news from Bangladesh; nor could I spend enough time to be a human/minority rights activist. Let me stop wasting more of my time here, and end for now with another comment/question for Mr. Rahman. You seem to be a Muslim who cares about the rights of the non-Muslims of Bangladesh. If you sound like you do not know about the barbaric atrocities against non-Muslims in Bangladesh, what could be expected from the average hateful Muslim fanatic of Bangladesh? Sukhamaya Bain ================================================== Let me understand this folks. Are you saying OUR government failed to protect minorities of Bangladesh? Really? Could you supply more information? Where and what happened? Thank you.
Shalom!
