In a news conference, Dr. Mohamed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood’s presidential candidate, said that a VP does not necessarily have to be from the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP). He will have more than one deputy from other currents and leanings. He further promises that the next cabinet will be a wide-based coalition government.

He stressed that he seeks to unite all national, patriotic players and stakeholders and candidates who came out of the presidential race, under one banner, with one target, to face the contrived efforts to restore the defunct former regime and reinstate its symbols once again, re-launching them back into political life.

Moreover, Morsi said that the people and the enlightened revolutionaries will not allow such a blatant replication of the old system of governance, and that just as they were able to topple Mubarak, they are quite capable of removing the crumbling remains and symbols of his corrupt regime.

"I stand at the same distance from all Egyptians, those who voted for me and those who did not. If I win the runoff, I will be president of all Egyptians. I will make every effort to defend the constitutional State.

"There is a general agreement to clear the remains of corruption and repression, remnants of the dismantled dictatorship. Very soon, you will hear that there is a united national front striving to overthrow the corrupt regime permanently."

According to Dr. Naguib, an Egyptian Coptic Christian, many of his fellow Copts will choose the Muslim Brotherhood and Freedom and Justice leader Dr. Morsi for president, to protect the revolution.

Coptic academic Dr. Nagy Naguib, member of the General Secretariat of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) in Sharqiya province, assured that Copts are an integral part of the Egyptian people and the fabric of society.

“Copts will not stray from the general discourse of the Egyptian people, who stand firmly with Dr. Morsi against the remnants of the old corrupt regime. The voice of extremism from both sides will have no active role in the management of the country in post-revolution Egypt.”

Naguib explained that Morsi has allayed Coptic fears in more than one meeting, expressing his confidence that many Christians will vote for Dr. Morsi in the run-off.

He stressed that the orientations of the Egyptian people is predominantly pro-Morsi, especially since justice is a fundamental component in Morsi’s platform. He asserted that Morsi does not call for a religious state, but a civil state with Islamic reference.

“Islamic reference does not frighten, neither Copts nor Muslims. Indeed, Copts have no problem with Islamic values. The Egyptian Church is not inclined towards a particular candidate. In fact, Bishop Bakhomious announced that he will punish clerics who directed or instructed Christians to elect Shafiq or any other specific presidential candidate.

Naguib further affirmed his whole-hearted support for Morsi because he will be the President of all Egyptians, a voice of moderation in the Islamic movement, capable of leading Egypt in the next phase and restoring stability, prosperity, security and safety to the Egyptian street.

Additionally, Naguib explained that Morsi was right at the heart of the revolution, and he presides over a powerful project for the rejuvenation and renaissance of Egypt, that his actions are carefully studied based on institutional, rather than individual values and principles, that he is a university professor who has his weight in university life, and that he has sophisticated administrative skills.

A Muslim Brotherhood win would resonate far beyond Egypt

The door to democracy is wide open. And what the movement does in power will have enormous influence on Islamists across the whole region.

When it comes to the Muslim Brotherhood, even the irreligious evince a sudden interest in what lies within the inner reaches of the Islamists' souls. Are they really democrats? What do they really believe? It is time for analysts to leave those questions to a higher authority. For now, it is much more important to ask what they intend to do and what they could do in office.

If balloting is free in the run-off in mid-June, Brotherhood presidential candidate Mohammed Morsi is the favourite to beat Ahmed Shafiq, President Mubarak's last prime minister. If that happens, Egypt's major democratic institutions, the parliament and the presidency, will be in Islamist hands. And while full oversight of the security services and military will be out of their grasp for the present – and important institutions like the judiciary will also likely push back against elements of their programme – the Brotherhood could soon have a fairly free hand to tackle many of the country's domestic problems as it sees fit, and even to begin pushing Egyptian foreign policy in different directions.

When it comes to what the Brotherhood intends domestically, the movement has been stunningly loquacious in its attempts to sketch out a practical programme for administering the country. And that programme focuses much of its attention on good governance, the rule of law, the provision of social services, and an economic policy that owes more to the Washington consensus than to 7th-century Arabia.

Does the Brotherhood intend to apply Islamic law? That is where it begins to retreat into generalities, claiming that it will use Islam as a "reference" or pursue the "goals" of Islamic law, but it will do so through democratic and constitutional channels.

And when it comes to foreign policy, the Brotherhood has also been a bit more cagey: it wishes to "renegotiate" the peace treaty with Israel but will clearly face an Israeli government deeply resistant to making any formal changes; it has communicated reassuring messages to a stream of official American visitors but clearly has a regional agenda that would cause some headaches for the US; and it is deeply and emotionally opposed to the blockade on Gaza but has also effectively told its cousins in Hamas that their cause will have to wait.
