Dr. Das,
I agree - Buddhism should be the best model of atheism. Unfortunately, today's activits of Atheism may leave you with a notion that they are just bunch of anti-religious hateful and clueless individuals.
Let me explain why. Atheist-activities, in America, are confined to - blocking religious festivities and displays on public properties by using the judicial system, and denying the existence of God. That's all.
Is there anything else to Atheism? Atheists have never been able to explain how Atheism is a better option for mankind than a conventional religion. My guess is - they are not sure of it either. May be - they should read philosophy of Buddhism to learn more about Atheism.
Also, Sufism provided shelter for a large number of Hindus, who were the oppressed class of people, known as the Scheduled caste, under the Vedic/Puranic religious practices. Therefore, you are right - Sufism may have influenced the transition from the conservative Vedic religious practices to the liberal Sanaton Dharmic practices, known as Hinduism today. I have no doubt that Sanaton Dharmic principle will merge with Sufism at at ease in many instances, such as in - "Jato mot, tato path."
Thanks.
