Re: [mukto-mona] The Enigma of Rape (by Trisha Ahmed and Avijit Roy)

Avijit,

This is what, I think, is the main cause of rape; sex is a biological need of men and women. The sexual urge, within that age, varies in man and woman; women have more control over the urge, biologically, than men. In men, some have more control than others, but - it is much stronger than women. When that urge is not met due to lack of partners or lack of opportunities, men and women look for alternative ways to satisfy the urge. Man, being physically stronger than woman, tend to use force to fulfill his sexual urge, if need be. When a man is physically attracted to a woman, and cannot fulfill his urge any other way, rape becomes an option.

I do not buy the theory of reproductive intent in a rape. No rapist rape because of his intent to leave his offsprings on earth; that's, probably, the last thing in his mind during the rape. Many of the rape victims happen to be beyond the child-bearing age.

It's a nicely written article.

Thanks.

Just as the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut forced American politicians to rethink gun control laws, the late December rape incident in India has also spurred discussions regarding women's status in the country and the subject of rape in general. The topic of rape has historically been approached from a multitude of angles; it has been justified as an act of uncontrolled emotion of sexual attraction by some, and as a display of supremacy by others. Rape is often regarded as a despicable act that is conducted to display male domination over females, but is power really the only factor in explaining why men rape?...
