[mukto-mona] Fw: Re: Be aware of habit-forming behaviors

The following thoughts came to my mind, and I wanted to share with you. I have shared it with my children already. I thought - you might enjoy it; You may share it with youngsters if you like it. This is about habit-forming acts. We all know them, yet we can't avoid getting hooked on to them. Since we can't avoid them, it is better to learn some useful tricks to manage them.

Acts, such as drinking, smoking, shopping, procrastinating, etc., are some of the habit-forming acts. They become habit when repeated regularly at relatively short interval.

Once a person is hooked on to a habit-forming act, it is extremely difficult to get out of. Young people are much more vulnerable to them, and can easily get trapped into these behavioral habits.

Best thing is to avoid habit-forming acts altogether. Smoking habit is a killer; it's totally a needless addiction to develop.

Alcohol consumption could be a health benefit if it is done with proper caution; alcohol is a part of our entertainment and enjoyment. It also can help mind/body relaxation. But, excessive consumption could be a killer as well. It's like raising a tiger-calf, we have to abandon it before it grows too big, otherwise it will kill us.

How can someone realize if he/she is developing addiction to an act?

The sign of addiction to an act can be detected by studying our body's response to the act. When our body craves for an action, we should realize that - body has formed a habit of that act. If someone can reject body's first few cravings for an act, body can break out of the habit-formation cycle. It will not crave for it next time when time comes. This can be done only at the initial or immature stage of habit-formation. The key is to recognize the problem at early stage to bail out of it.

Unfortunately, young people may not recognize the initial sign of craving, and could keep fulfilling body's demand day after day without realizing what's going on. This is why most of the bad habits are formed at young age, and people get stuck with them all throughout their lives. Smoking and alcohol habits are major problems in youngsters. So, be aware of these acts.

Lastly, one important thing to remember is that - our body cannot form habits out of sporadic acts, meaning irregular acts are not habit-forming. For example, occasional drinking, occasional shopping, occasional procrastination, etc. do not form habit. This is a loophole that we can use to indulge in habit-forming acts as well without getting hooked on to them.
