Re: [mukto-mona] Woman sentenced to jail after reporting she was raped in Dubai

Not he, Dr. Roy, Surpanakha was the sister of Ravana. She proposed to marry Laxman, and he cut off her nose. This incident finally triggered the war between Ram and Ravana. Anyway this is just mythology, this should not be used as an example of what Hindus do.

I was surprised to see what Mr. Islam has dug out to defend all the terrible judicial injustices being done every day in the name of defending Islam.

To tell you the truth, I was only familiar with the story of Ram, who cut the nose of the demon who transformed into a woman to attract Ram's attention; but, Ram, being the God himself, knew the deceptive trick of this demon. He therefore cut his nose to teach him a lesson. This demon used to ransack temples and yoga venues of Rishis. Ram, as the incarnation of God, came to the world only to eliminate these demons from the world. This is the mythological version of the purpose of the incarnation of Ram.

Mr. Islam used it to portray that Hindus used to do this to women in those days. Rest of his discoveries about Brahmanism is totally unfamiliar to me. I came to know for the first time from his internet ensembles. Those are all horrible stories; I am not sure about their authenticity, but - I am ready to accept them as he is. All I want to remind that, probably, no Hindu can be found today who will come forward to defend those practices, and still would like to implement them, because they were once part of the Hindu society. I also want to remind that there are many more Goddesses than Gods in Hinduism, which goes against that notion.

I, also, would like to remind that there are millions of Muslims who are still demanding and fighting to establish Sharia System of Justice throughout the world. As far as I know, Mr. Islam does not support Sharia Justice System. Therefore, he should not defend it in the name of defending Islam. What happened in Dubai Court is not defensible, no matter what.

I knew, your comment was not directed at me.  When a comment on Dubai justice was countered by a comment on Ramayana story of cutting off of the nose of a female demon who wanted to marry Rama, the mindset of Syed Aslam was clear.  He loves to pick on the Mullahs and Maulavis and fails to recognize that most of their behavior is inspired by religious literature.

This statement was not directed to you, Dr. Das; this was directed to people who try to defend Islamic social justice system without knowing what it is. I know, I did not state my points clearly in my last post. There were a few errors also, which may have caused confusion. Sorry about that.

According to the verses of "Holy Qur'an"  any rape has to be witnessed by four male/eight female witnesses.  Another example of justice towards women in Islam, two women equals one man!

Do I support Sharia?  Good question!  Anything that invokes divinity to prove its validity deserves to be drowned into deep sea.

Dr. Das, I think most people know Islamic social justice system very well, which is clearly stated in the Sharia Laws. If you do not support Sharia Laws then do not talk about Islamic social justice at all. The verdict, in this case, is correct as per Sharia Laws, because she was not raped in front of 4 witness. She received the least severe punishment; she should be happy with the verdict. She could have been stoned to death. Jiten Roy

Apparently, it is a 'blatant expression of my communal attitude'[btw, your spelling was wrong, I hope you can detect it.].  However, if you look into religious literature of Islam, you would be enriched with plenty of misogynous justice which is called divine.  I have never said, Brahmins are free from misogyny.  Burning widow on a pyre is a glaring example.

I do not defend anything.  Stop lecturing about my lack of understanding.  The forum hasn't appointed you a head master yet.

Mr. Kamal Das

What makes you so sure that "This is an example of the divine justice
according to Islam."  Can you explain ?

Essentially, this is abuse of Islam !!!!
As per my understanding, the Sheikhdoms are not consistent with
the true spirit of Islam .....

Your explicit statement is a blatent expression of your narrow
communal attitudes and your lack understanding of sociopolitical
perspectives of patriarchal societies.

Woman sentenced to jail after reporting she was raped

While in Dubai for business last March, a 24-year-old interior designer says she was sexually assaulted by a co-worker. After it happened, she alerted police.

Marte Deborah Dalelv, Alleged Norwegian Rape Victim, Sentenced To 16 Months Jail In Dubai For Sex Outside Of Marriage

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- A Norwegian woman sentenced to 16 months in jail in Dubai for having sex outside marriage after she reported an alleged rape said Friday she decided to speak out in hopes of drawing attention to the risks of outsiders misunderstanding the Islamic-influenced legal codes in this cosmopolitan city.
The case has drawn outrage from rights groups and others in the West since the 24-year-old interior designer was sentenced Wednesday. It also highlights the increasingly frequent tensions between the United Arab Emirates' international atmosphere and its legal system, which is strongly influenced by Islamic traditions in a nation where foreign workers and visitors greatly outnumber locals.
"I have to spread the word. ... After my sentence we thought, `How can it get worse?'" Marte Deborah Dalelv told The Associated Press in an interview at a Norwegian aid compound in Dubai where she is preparing her appeal scheduled for early September.
Dalelv, who worked for an interior design firm in Qatar since 2011, claims she was sexually assaulted by a co-worker in March while she was attending a business meeting in Dubai.
She said she fled to the hotel lobby and asked for the police to be called. The hotel staff asked if she was sure she wanted to involve the police, Dalelv said.
"Of course I want to call the police," she said. "That is the natural reaction where I am from."
Dalelv said she was given a medical examination seeking evidence of the alleged rape and underwent a blood test for alcohol. Such tests are commonly given in the UAE for alleged assaults and in other cases. Alcohol is sold widely across Dubai, but public intoxication can bring charges.
The AP does not identity the names of alleged sexual assault victims, but Dalelv went public voluntarily to talk to media.
Dalelv was detained for four days after being accused of having sex outside marriage, which is outlawed in the UAE although the law is not actively enforced for tourists as well as hundreds of thousands of Westerners and others on resident visas.
She managed to reach her stepfather in Norway after being loaned a phone card by another woman in custody.
"My stepdad, he answered the phone, so I said, that I had been raped, I am in prison ... please call the embassy," she recounted.
"And then I went back and I ... just had a breakdown," she continued. "It was very emotional, to call my dad and tell him what happened."
Norwegian diplomats later secured her release and she has been allowed to remain at the Norwegian Seamen's Center in central Dubai. She said her alleged attacker received a 13-month sentence for out-of-wedlock sex and alcohol consumption.
Dubai authorities did not respond to calls for comment, but the case has brought strong criticism from Norwegian officials and activists.
"This verdict flies in the face of our notion of justice," Norway's foreign minister, Espen Barth Eide, told the NTB news agency, calling it "highly problematic from a human rights perspective."
Previous cases in the UAE have raised similar questions, with alleged sexual assault victims facing charges for sex-related offenses. Other legal codes also have been criticized for being at odds with the Western-style openness promoted by Dubai.
On Thursday, Dubai police said they arrested a man who posted an Internet video of an Emirati beating a South Asian van driver after an apparent traffic altercation. Police said they took the action because images of a potential crime were "shared."
In London, a spokesman for the Emirates Center for Human Rights, a group monitoring UAE affairs, said the Dalelv case points out the need for the UAE to expand its legal protections for alleged rape victims.
"We urge authorities to reform the laws governing incidents of rape in the country," said Rori Donaghy, "to ensure women are protected against sexual violence and do not become the targets of prosecution when reporting crimes."
