I am not sure who these "we" are. If these "we" are the Muslims of Bangladesh in general, then I must say that Mr. QR's concerns are unfounded. In the eyes of the western world largely represented by America, Bangladesh is a moderate Muslim country. I am not aware which Muktomona members portray Bangladeshis as Islamists. Mr. QR should be more specific about the accusation.
I am also not sure which Indian channels are doing harm to the image of Bangladesh and how they are doing it. I am curious.
No doubt in religious beliefs Bangladeshis are in general moderate. They are simple minded good people also. But that does not mean that we do not have religious fundamentalists, fanatics, and militants. Containment of these elements, although small in numbers, depends on the secular forces. That's why I proposed that BNP leave Jamaat and engage in secular nationalist politics. Also I proposed that religion based politics should be banned.

I think we are passing an interesting time about political matters in our country. Slowly but surely we are moving away from street demonstrations, processions etc to blogs, Face book, electronic campaign. We have more active people in cyber world than the real one.
We are still conscious about politics but we don't wish to get killed over it. We are just moving it to a different arena.
Albeit by most members often presented Bangladeshis as Islamist or worse by active mukto-mona members but I think we'll have "Mother of all protests" if one fine morning our government shut down "Star plus", SONY TV, Star world, ESPN etc from cable (All owned by Indian companies and the Star family has Rupert Murdock who own's the Islamophobe Fox network in USA).
This would piss off our ladies and we know our ladies don't joke around!! (Men do)
Unless pushed we are peace loving and easy going people. We are not fanatics but moderate people. We just need good leaders to bring the best out of us (Right now often they extract the worst in us).

A strong opposition is a necessary condition for a dynamic democratic process. BNP was born under the leadership of pro-liberation forces. They picked up and used the frustration and anger of the majority Bangladeshis caused by the failure, corruption and autocratic rule of AL at that time.
There was no effective opposition in early years of Bangladeshi democracy. NAP (Mozaffar) could have played that role because, the NAP was organized and popular at that time. But NAP and CPB both acted as B teams of AL for some unknown reason. Either they thought they will control Mujib to their planned direction or they were lack of self-confidence to oppose the autocracy of AL.
In front of USIS the killing of BCU's was a test case. The then DUCSU VP (BCU), Mujahidul Islam Islam rebelled against Mujib, tore away Mujib's DUCSU membership certificate in Paltan maidan. AL and CL came down on them with heavy hand. Burnt down NAP and CU office. Physically attacked workers and offices (I witnessed personally there in the procession as a student of Dhaka College).
On the other hand, JSD was killing people in the remote areas of the country in the name of Gonobahini. They confronted Rakkhi Bahini who has killed about 24 thousands of bright young men who were misguided by their leader so called "Dada"(Later it confessed it).
Many political drama unfolded, Mujib was killed. Nation stunted. Zia took stand. First militarily then politically. Naturally he gathered anti Mujib elements, most of them are in chinese line who were anti-liberation but politically seasoned.
When JAGODAL (Zia-Sattar) formed, not only the leftists (Pro-Peking) and pro-Pakistanis came in to the that camp, war criminals also sneaked in to it. But war criminal Jamatis only strongly aliened with BNP under Khaleda Zia.
The politics of AL revolves with the credit of leadership in the liberation war. But it could not prevent their fall because of mounting corruption,mismanagement in the governance and tyranny in their first term ruling years.
Today BNP grown to its adulthood as a political party. Probably there was a time when they thought they needed Jamatis with it to attain the power. Today it does not need it. But sadly, the language of Khaleda, the tone she used recently (Gopali ete) reflects the lack of taste as a leader. Therefore, BNP needs a new leadership and more self reliance (leaving Jsmatis, bacause people does not like it) to perform the role of an effective opposition. To keep the ruling party on the toes and keep them away from mischiefs, BNP needs to be strong and reasonable.

If BNP leaves Jamaat, a more healthy and competitive political environment will be created in the country. There should not be denying the fact that today BNP is well established as a nationalist democratic political party. Conspiracies aside, we should also accept the fact that BNP in it's political journey since it's inception forty years ago has gone through ups and downs, and trials and tribulations as well, and in this way has achieved maturity. Although in the beginning BNP flourished with the help of anti liberation forces, currently it cannot be accused of nourishing anti liberation forces within the party. The present leadership in general consists of modern and educated people. The problem is that their voice is feeble. Today I don't see any reason why it cannot be a good competitor of AL in pursuing politics consistent with the ideals of our great liberation war. Looks like rebels have to come from inside and force the current BNP leadership to shun politics that pampers Jamaat. I hope good sense will prevail in the BNP leadership and the progressive coterie will dominate.
I hope the present government will complete the following tasks:1. Ban Jamaat and religion-based parties2. Complete the trial of the war criminals3. Reform electoral process4. Amend constitution ensuring that none can become the head of the government more than twice5. Ensure that the next election is given at the earliest and that it be not laughable any more.
If BNP leaves the company of Jamaat, the above agenda can be easily fulfilled.

I will not advise BNP to dissociate from Jamat; it's a natural match. BNP leader celebrates 15th August as her birthday, which happens to be the day the father of the nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was assassinated.
