A message posted on websites as that of Al- Qaeda Chief Ayman al Zawahiri on Saturday is being considered as a new international conspiracy against Bangladesh to turn this country into another Afghanistan and hit at the root of its secular identity and spirit of the Liberation War.

Alleging that thousands of people are being killed in the streets of Bangladesh for protesting against a 'collusion of the anti-Islam secular government', the message urged people to confront this crusader onslaught against Islam.

The reported message is also seen as a Jamaat move to use Al-Qaeda for Hefazat to serve the purpose of anti-liberation and militant forces.

A 29-minute audio message with the image of Al- Qaeda Chief Ayman al Zawahiri in the background spread on website Saturday but without any dateline. The message came under the headline: 'Massacre Behind a Wall of Silence'.

Questions have arisen over the credibility of the message.

Describing Bangladesh as a big prison the message says Bangladesh is now the victim of such a conspiracy in which Indian agents, Pakistani corrupt military leadership and the power-hungry traitor politicians are involved.

The message further said those who conducted genocide in Bangladesh are now carrying on genocide in Pakistan. Those who colluded with India in the name of protecting the dignity of Bangalees are now launching attacks on the trust, dignity, life and property of Bangalees.

Meanwhile, noted jurist Barrister Rafiqul Haque said the statement made by Al-Qaeda definitely manifests a conspiracy against independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh.

"I condemn the statement. Al-Queda has made the statement illegally," he added.

He called upon the authorities concerned and the people of Bangladesh to give a good teaching to Al-Qaeda and resist it.

Professor Muntasir Mamun, a noted historian and former acting president of Ekatturer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, said Jamaat and other anti-liberation forces are very much active and united to destroy independence and sovereignty of the country.

"We have been claiming for last eight/nine years that all enemies of independent Bangladesh are united," he said.

He claimed that anti-liberation party Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh is an organisation of Pakistan and funded by ISI.

BNP sided with Jamaat in its bid to resist trial of war crimes accused Jamaat leaders, he added. He said, "Jamaat, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, the USA and the Al-Queda chief are speaking in same language. The latest statement of Zawahiri has once again proved that they have similar stand against independence of Bangladesh. The USA with the help of others would like to control China."

Professor Gyasuddin Molla of History Department of Dhaka University said Zawahiri's message is part of a conspiracy to turn Bangladesh into a Taliban state "so that we cannot live with independence and sovereignty."

"It is an open secret that they were not in favour of independence of Bangladesh and now they are sympathiser of Jamaat and Hefazat," he said.

Associate Professor Rafiqul Islam of Peace and Conflict Department of Dhaka University said "Taking into consideration our independence, we are shocked at the message. Hundreds of Islamists participated in war against Russia in Afghanistan. On return home, many of them are now associated with Jamaat."

He also said although the message did not mention the name of Jamaat, it virtually relates to the Jamaatis facing war crimes trial as the trial of Islamists has been mentioned in the message.

"After 42 years of independence the message spoke against our liberation. But these Jihadists would not be able to do anything as our people are united and alert," he added.

In thier instant reaction Hefazat Amir Allama Shah Ahmad Safi and secretary-general Maulana Junaid Babunagari issued a statement saying: "We do not know who have released this audio message and with what motive. We suspect, it may be another new conspiracy against the Muslims of this country including its independence and sovereignty." However, Jamaat Islami expressed no formal reaction.

The entire message carrying his call of crusade with video footage laid on Al-Zawahiri's audio lasts nearly 29 minutes and is titled "Bangladesh: Massacre Behind a Wall of Silence".

The first two minutes screen footage of last year's May 5 police action at a Hifazat-e Islam rally in Dhaka. Then starts Al-Zawahiri's message hitting out at the western media's alleged silence on 'how Muslims are massacred in Bangladesh'.

"My Muslim brothers in Bangladesh, I invite you to confront this crusader onslaught against Islam, which is being orchestrated by the leading criminals in the subcontinent and the West against Islam, the prophet of Islam and the Islamic creed, so that they may turn you into slaves of a despotic and disbelieving system."

Describing Bangladesh as a 'huge prison', the message says the honour and dignity of Muslims is at stake in the country.

"Bangladesh is the victim of a conspiracy in which the agents of India, the corrupt leadership of Pakistan Army and treacherous power-hungry politicians of Bangladesh and Pakistan are all involved," the message reads.

Al-Zawahiri called on Bangladeshis "to gather around the true scholars of Islam, support them and protect them".

"I invite you to back them and support them and guard them. And I invite you to launch a massive public uprising in defence of Islam against the enemies of Islam," the Al Qaeda chief says.

"I invite the leading scholars [Ulamaye keram] of Bangladesh to fulfill the role that Islam has given them."

He thinks Bangladesh has not worked as a nation which was created more than 40 years ago 'to protect the independence, glory, honour and freedom of its people.'

The Al-Qaeda chief's tirade appears to have been provoked by the war crimes trials, in which most senior leaders of the country's leading Islamist party, Jamaat-e-Islami, are implicated.

One of them, Abdul Quader Molla, has already been hanged. Several others face death and life sentences.

In addition, many Jamaat leaders and activists are in jail on charges of involvement in violence last year.

The Jamaat and other Islamist groups in Bangladesh and elsewhere have also called for 'uprisings' against the present government and attacked it for upholding secularism.

Zawahiri was at his attacking best on the question of democracy.

"If this system [democracy], man-made constitution brings in a government that can please the western world, the West encourages and supports it...if it brings a government that even slightly opposes the West or the enemies of Islam, then the tanks, artillery, bombs and bullets of the slaves of the West lie in wait for such government," he said in the video message.

"And Egypt is only a fresh example of this, besides Algeria in the 90s."
