MAYOR OF BRUSSELS CONFIRMS PLACE MEMORIAL FOR LANGUAGE MARTYRS
The Mayor of Ixelles of Brussels has confirmed a place in the nicely located public park ("Gordon Bennet Course") close to Bangladesh Embassy for building a memorial for the language martyrs of 1952. The issue was only confirmed on 20 February,2014.
Bangladesh Embassy in Brussels will organize a small ceremony with the presence of the Deputy Mayor and expatriate Bangladesh nationals tomorrow evening following Mission's official programme in connection with the observance of the National Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day. Mission has already built a replica of the Shaheed Minar which would be erected temporarily for the occasion.
H.E. Ms. Ismat Jahan, Bangladesh Ambassador to Belgium and Head of Mission to the European Union, has been vigorously pursuing the matter for the last three years with the Mayor and the Board of Alderman while impressing upon them that Bangladesh was not seeking for a memorial for Bangladesh's Martyrs only, but since the world celebrates International Mother Language Day on 21st February, it is most befitting that there would be a memorial for the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the cause of mother language in Brussels, the capital of Europe.
It may be noted here that the good news coincides with the observance of the Shaheed Dibash.
