The caste system was imposed by Arians. Who gave religion to a bunch of nature worshipers (Like we see in Japan) who worshiped air, fire, animals etc.
Still mostly in a civilized country (Guess you are referring to the USA) people chose to be a janitor. It is not forced upon them. Also a bus conductor can become a PM of another civilized country.
It depends on how we set up our social system.
In Bangladesh we used to have few families who used to dominate the whole country (Pakistan still has that system). It has been changed by visionary leaders like Abul Kasem Fazlul Huq and his contemporaries. Now it is quite common to see people becoming very successful from very humble background.
New industries are being set up by people with humble origin and many of them are very powerful now. This still requires some evolutionary process (As many of us do not understand the level of responsibility that is required with new power) but we are walking in the right direction.
these are deliberate mistakes of some people in the society.

As far as I know the history of caste system is much older than Ballal Sen. Manu also gave very detailed description of how to deal with lower caste (Or what the Sudras should not do). These are ancient scriptures not from Ballal Sen era.

Religious scriptures are only as good as its interpretation. For example, caste system in Gita; it defines four professional castes, meaning four classifications of labor. Those classifications exist in all societies everywhere in the world, and they will be there in the future. At some point in the Sen Dynasty, probably during Ballal Sen, professional classifications were interpreted as classifications of human-beings, and then it was perpetuated as the birth-right. Who is to blame - Scriptures or its interpreters?
I see every day how a Janitorial staff is treated in a civilized country, and I think where people in our societies still are. I know all these misinterpretations of religious scriptures are not just simple mistakes; these are deliberate mistakes of some people in the society.
