Dhaka, Mar 12 (UNB) – Arab League Secretary General Dr Nabil El Araby has praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's 'guts and determination' to form and hold trials at the International Crimes Tribunals, Bangladesh (ICTs).

The Secretary General mentioned that he was following the developments with the ICT trials quite closely, and assured the Bangladesh State Minister that the Arab League would always stand for justice.

He made the observation during a meeting with State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam in Cairo on Tuesday, according to a message received here on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Shahriar Alam said Bangladesh wants to further deepen its relations with brotherly Arab countries to realise its own development potentials.

"We also need the support and understanding for the challenges we face, including the ones with climate change, the issue of Myanmar refugees and false propaganda by certain quarters about the ongoing trials of those accused of committing crimes against humanity in 1971," he said.

Dr Nabil appreciated Bangladesh's principled support to the Palestinian issue, and urged Bangladesh to play its active role in the UN and other international fora in support of the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people for an independent and sovereign State.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister lauded Bangladesh's various achievements in the socioeconomic sector under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and expressed Egypt's interest in 'aggressively' pursuing its bilateral relations with Asia Pacific countries, including Bangladesh.

Shahriar Alam welcomed the signing of the MoU on Foreign Office Consultations between the two countries in 2013, and invited the Egyptian side to Bangladesh to hold the first consultation meeting later this year.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister responded positively and suggested discussing issues of common interest, including trade, investment, scientific and educational cooperation in details during the consultations.

The two ministers agreed to work closely to further expand the trade volume between Bangladesh and Egypt, and conclude the proposed government-to-government arrangement for manpower export from Bangladesh to Egypt.

The Egyptian side expressed satisfaction at the performance of Bangladesh's workers in the Egyptian garments sector.
